Background process¶
A computer process that performs work without occupying the user’s foreground interaction.
Core Idea¶
Unix daemons, Windows services, shell background jobs and application helpers differ in parent process, session, lifecycle, privileges and interface. The operating system schedules a process independently of direct foreground input while event, timer or service mechanisms trigger its logging, monitoring, notification or maintenance work. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of operating systems. It is the domain-specific identity fixed by the operating system and version, executable and process owner, launch mechanism, session and terminal relation, lifecycle, privileges, triggers, resource limits, logs and foreground communication are explicit.
Scope of Application¶
