Belief Bias

The tendency to judge an argument's logical validity by the believability of its conclusion rather than its form — a cheap plausibility check displacing an effortful logical-form check — exposed by crossing validity against believability in a 2×2.

Core Idea

Belief bias is the systematic tendency to judge an argument's logical validity by the believability of its conclusion rather than by the formal relation between premises and conclusion. In syllogistic tasks where validity and believability are factorially crossed, reasoners accept invalid-but-plausible arguments and reject valid-but-implausible ones. The mechanism is a substitution: the cheap plausibility check ("does this match what I believe?") displaces the expensive logical-form check ("does this follow by the rules?").

Belief bias makes legible a distinction naive reasoning collapses: validity, a property of the inference relation, versus truth, a property of the conclusion's content. The factorial design forces the separation by manufacturing cases where they disagree. This sharpens what a verdict diagnoses — only conflict items reveal which check the reasoner ran — reframing the question from "did the subject get the right answer?" to "when logic and belief diverge, which governed?"
