CARS Model

The CARS model reads a research introduction as establishing a territory, carving a niche in prior work, and positioning the present study to occupy it.

Core Idea

John Swales's Create a Research Space (CARS) model describes three rhetorical functions of a research-article introduction: establish the field and prior work (territory), mark a gap or question within it (niche), and position the present study as a response (occupation). They are functions, not mandatory single paragraphs or a fixed keyword sequence.

Scope of Application

Readers and writers use CARS to ask why a new scholarly article belongs in its field. A University of Rochester teaching adaptation presents its instructional use. Laurence Anthony's original study of twelve software-engineering introductions found the broad moves in all sampled texts but noted frequent cycles and step-level mismatches. Swales's 1990 book is verified as the origin, but its full CARS chapter was not inspected here.

Clarity

In Anthony's Table 1, anonymized introduction 1.2 has move path 1–2–1–3–1–3, not a single 1–2–3 pass. Introduction 1.1 has even more repeated territory/niche cycles. These are executed corpus codings, though the raw article prose was not independently recoded. A constructed sentence sequence about known work, an unstudied question and the present experiment would illustrate the roles but not be evidence of an actual paper.

Manages Complexity

The three moves compress the reader's question of context, need and response. They can also flatten disciplinary practice if made into a rigid template. Anthony's software-engineering sample required attention to definitions, examples and evaluation of the present research beyond the simplest original step list.

Abstract Reasoning

Code a span by rhetorical purpose, allow a move to recur, and check that a niche is genuinely grounded in prior work and answered by the present study. Do not treat a paragraph break or signal word as a move by itself. A teaching heuristic and a descriptive corpus code are related uses with different standards of evidence.

Knowledge Transfer

The territory–niche–occupation relation can orient other academic genres, but their local move realizations need checking. The method presupposes a recognized Genre context for research introductions; it is not itself a genre. Anthony's twelve software-engineering introductions do not prove a universal order across all disciplines. A grant proposal borrowing CARS is an analogy unless genre evidence supports the same pattern.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space

CARS Model sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (84th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
