Cathexis¶
The psychoanalytic investment of mental or emotional energy in a person, object, idea or representation.
Core Idea¶
Cathexis translates Freud’s Besetzung and is theory-laden rather than a measurable energy quantity; object, ego and anticathexis uses require textual attribution. Libidinal or affective investment makes one representation motivationally charged, while withdrawal and redistribution alter attachment and conflict within the theory. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of psychoanalysis. It is the domain-specific identity fixed by the theorist and translated term, text and date, psychic-energy model, investing agency, target representation or object, type and direction of investment, withdrawal or counterinvestment and interpretive limits are explicit.
Scope of Application¶
