A psychoanalytic defense in which an unacceptable or anxiety-provoking impulse is managed by adopting and exaggerating the opposite attitude or behavior.

Core Idea¶

Reaction formation interprets conspicuously rigid opposite conduct as a defense against awareness or expression of the underlying impulse, within a psychodynamic formulation rather than surface behavior alone.^[1] Conflict and anxiety make the original impulse threatening; countercathexis strengthens an opposed stance that can become disproportionate, inflexible, and indirectly reveal the defended polarity.
