Reaction formation¶
A psychoanalytic defense in which an unacceptable or anxiety-provoking impulse is managed by adopting and exaggerating the opposite attitude or behavior.
Core Idea¶
Reaction formation interprets conspicuously rigid opposite conduct as a defense against awareness or expression of the underlying impulse, within a psychodynamic formulation rather than surface behavior alone. Conflict and anxiety make the original impulse threatening; countercathexis strengthens an opposed stance that can become disproportionate, inflexible, and indirectly reveal the defended polarity. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
