Narrative Characterization¶
The construction of a storyworld character by explicitly ascribing properties and by prompting audiences to infer them from actions, speech, appearance, consciousness, setting, and performance cues.
Core Idea¶
Narrative characterization is the process by which a narrative or dramatic work supplies, organizes, and qualifies information from which an audience constructs a character in a storyworld. A text or performance may ascribe a property directly—through a narrator's description, a character's self-report, or another character's judgment—or present cues from which the audience infers properties: action, speech, thought, appearance, gesture, setting, interaction, reaction, and patterns across time.
The abstraction is not merely “describing a person.” It coordinates three levels:
Scope of Application¶
The identity operates across literary narrative, drama, film, television, comics, oral narrative, games, and other story media. It also appears in narratological analysis, stylistics, dramaturgy, performance studies, screen studies, writing practice, adaptation, and translation. Rimmon-Kenan treats characterization as the textual representation of the story's character component and separates direct definition from indirect presentation. Jannidis defines it as ascribing information or properties to a storyworld agent, emphasizing explicit attribution, inference from cues, and culturally variable background knowledge.
Clarity¶
A case qualifies when six questions have determinate answers:
- Which storyworld agent is being constructed?
- Which textual, visual, auditory, spatial, or performance signs bear on that agent?
- Who or what supplies each attribution?
- Is the property stated directly or inferred, and what knowledge supports the inference?
- How reliable, hypothetical, partial, or contested is the attribution?
- How do later cues preserve or revise the audience's character model?
Manages Complexity¶
Characters are seldom delivered as complete dossiers. A novel, play, or film disperses evidence over scenes and channels. Narrative characterization compresses this stream into a revisable model that lets audiences recognize an agent, explain behavior, anticipate choices, perceive contradiction, and register transformation without reprocessing every cue.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Characterization licenses abductive reasoning. Audiences move from signs to the best available property model: a pattern of evasive answers may suggest deception; repeated risk-taking may suggest courage, recklessness, desperation, or a culturally scripted heroic role. The inference is defeasible because later context can supply a better explanation.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The mechanism transfers literally across story media when the same roles survive: an agent, characterizing signs, attributable sources, audience inference, and a revisable property model. A novelist's syntax, a stage actor's pause, a film close-up, a comic panel's posture, and a game character's repeated choice are different channels performing the same narrative operation.
Transfer across adaptation is especially revealing. A novel's direct access to thought may become dialogue, voice-over, gesture, mise-en-scène, or omitted information in film. A play's stage directions may be reinterpreted by performers.
