Core Idea

Co-citation links two cited documents when another document cites both. Its raw frequency is the number of distinct works in a declared citing corpus that cite the pair. If C(a) and C(b) are the sets of works citing a and b, the count is |C(a) ∩ C(b)|. It records joint use of documents, not agreement between them.[^ref-5350f8b77e9f]

Scope of Application

The document-level rule is used in bibliometrics and science mapping. A matrix of pairwise counts can support a network or specialty cluster, as in Small's original particle-physics application, but mapping and normalization are downstream choices. The measured value depends on the indexed corpus and its observation window; a fixed corpus has a fixed count, while newly included joint citers can raise it.[ref-5350f8b77e9f][ref-8fd7546d2a1a]

Clarity

Co-citation looks at works that cite both focal documents. Bibliographic coupling looks in the opposite direction, at references shared by the focal documents themselves. A direct citation between two works is also different from a third work citing both. None of these citation patterns alone proves topical identity or endorsement.[ref-5350f8b77e9f][ref-ebbcb76227f0]

Manages Complexity

The measure compresses many reference lists into one transparent count per pair. Repeating the same common-citer test yields a pairwise matrix that can be explored as a network. That compression loses citation context: a frequently used methods paper may connect otherwise distinct clusters. A relative or normalized score can aid comparison but is not the raw number of joint citers.[ref-5350f8b77e9f][ref-8fd7546d2a1a]

Abstract Reasoning

Choose cited works a,b and a citing corpus. Intersect their incoming citer sets, then count distinct members. If X and Y cite both while Z cites only a, the pair's frequency is 2; adding a new work citing both makes it 3. The result establishes a corpus-relative relation. Any inference about shared concepts or scientific influence needs separate evidence.[^ref-5350f8b77e9f]

Knowledge Transfer

The same rule transfers literally between scholarly literatures when cited documents, reference links and the citing corpus are specified consistently. At a more general level it instantiates the live Relation: a pair of relata with a definite membership test. The generic relation travels beyond bibliometrics, but the named co-citation measure remains tied to actual citation evidence. A cluster or an author-level adaptation changes the downstream analysis or unit, rather than the document-level definition.[^ref-5350f8b77e9f]

Joint citation defines a binary relation on pairs of cited works.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space

Co-citation sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (67th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
