Counterfactual history¶
Historical inquiry that evaluates what might have happened under a specified change to past conditions in order to clarify causes and contingency in what did occur.
Core Idea¶
Rigorous counterfactual analysis constrains the antecedent, minimizes collateral changes and uses evidence-backed causal mechanisms, distinguishing it from unconstrained alternate-history fiction. An actual causal sequence is reconstructed, one antecedent is changed under a closeness rule and plausible downstream consequences are propagated and compared with the observed outcome. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of historiography. It is the domain-specific identity fixed by the historical question and actual outcome, counterfactual antecedent, time and scope of divergence, minimal-rewrite or similarity rule, causal model and mechanisms, actors and constraints, evidence for possibility, downstream scenario and comparison with reality are explicit.
