Culmination Surprise¶
The operational failure of advancing past the culminating point — where sustaining capacity falls below what forward momentum requires — without recognising it, so the surprise lives entirely in the recognition gap between real culmination and its discovery.
Core Idea¶
Culmination surprise is the failure in which a force advances past its culminating point — the moment sustaining capacity (logistics, fresh combat power, political tolerance, morale) can no longer maintain momentum — without commanders recognising it. The advance runs on inherited momentum and keeps looking successful; when the deficit finally manifests as a counter-stroke or collapse, commanders are surprised. Clausewitz's concept; the German Spring 1918 offensives are the paradigmatic case.

Clarity¶
Naming culmination surprise picks one specific way an offensive comes apart: not defeat in detail, not defeat by manoeuvre, but defeat by advancing past the culminating point while still winning fights — so tactical successes can be a symptom of overextension. Its sharper distinction is temporal: the moment of culmination versus the moment of recognition, with the entire surprise in the gap between them. Because culmination is anticipable, the collapse is a recognition failure, not a shock.
Manages Complexity¶
The raw reversal question is a sprawling logistical problem. Culmination surprise compresses it onto two curves: sustaining capacity (declining) and depth of advance (rising), with every detail entering only as it bends one curve. Their crossing is the culminating point. The recognition gap is the second compression, converting an apparent shock into a tracked interval with a lead/lag classification the planner applies to every recent success to sort trustworthy signals from lagging ones.
