Default Effect¶
Shift the distribution of choices without changing any option by flipping which alternative is preselected as the no-action outcome, because a stack of retention mechanisms makes people disproportionately keep whatever the default is.
Core Idea¶
People disproportionately end up with whichever option was preselected as the no-action outcome, so flipping the default between otherwise identical choices shifts the resulting distribution far beyond what stated preferences predict. Opt-out organ-donation countries reach ~99% consent while comparable opt-in countries sit near 12%. The pull is a composite — effort avoidance, an implicit endorsement signal, inertia, loss aversion keyed to the default, and regret asymmetry — acting jointly.
Scope of Application¶
The effect lives in one domain — cognitive-cost-bearing choosers facing a preselected no-action option — and these are application settings of that single substrate.

Clarity¶
Naming the effect promotes a previously invisible variable — which option happens when the chooser does nothing — into a first-class design question, separating it from the options themselves. It also blocks a tempting inference: because a default attracts retention through mechanisms unrelated to the options' merits, its commanded share cannot be read as a measurement of what the population actually prefers.
Manages Complexity¶
Auto-enrollment uptake, opt-out donation rates, persistent pre-filled forms, and durable factory settings each seem to demand their own behavioral explanation. The concept compresses them to one architectural variable and one high-leverage knob: flip the default and the distribution moves. It further collapses the policy space to a binary — harness retention toward a known-good option, or elicit genuine preference with a no-default forced-choice frame.
