Demonstrative¶
A deictic expression such as this or that that identifies a referent relative to a contextual center or discourse location.
Core Idea¶
Pronominal, adnominal and adverbial demonstratives, proximal and distal systems and spatial, temporal, discourse and recognitional uses vary across languages. The expression instructs an addressee to locate a referent using speaker, addressee, gesture, perceptual field or discourse context plus a language-specific contrast. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of linguistics. It is the domain-specific identity fixed by the language and variety, expression and morphosyntactic role, deictic dimensions and contrast set, contextual center, gesture or discourse anchor, referent, agreement and exophoric or endophoric use are explicit.
Scope of Application¶
