Dual-process Theory

Models cognition as the interaction of a fast, automatic, associative process (System 1) supplying default responses and a slow, effortful, rule-based process (System 2) selectively recruited to endorse or override them under conflict, novelty, or stakes.

Core Idea

Dual-process theory models cognition as the interaction of two distinct processes: a fast, automatic, associative, low-effort process (System 1) that runs continuously and generates default responses by pattern-matching, and a slow, controlled, rule-based, effortful process (System 2) recruited selectively when the default is flagged as conflicted, novel, or high-stakes. Most behaviour is the joint product: the fast process supplies the candidate answer; the slow either ratifies it or revises it. The asymmetries are cost, bias profile, and trainability.

Clarity

The framework pulls speed and effort apart from accuracy, two axes folk talk collapses. The fast process is not simply the error-prone one, nor the slow process simply the correct one. Once "fast" stops meaning "wrong," error analysis sharpens into structural questions — was the default adopted without endorsement, was deliberation starved of evidence, was a correct intuition overridden? — each pointing to a different remedy.

Manages Complexity

Judgment research is a catalogue of scores of heuristics, biases, and individual differences that resists memorization. Dual-process theory compresses it onto one architecture with two processes and a recruitment boundary, so nearly every finding resolves to one of four two-process locations. The intervention space collapses correspondingly to four levers, and the whole apparatus runs at the functional level with no commitment to a neural account.

Abstract Reasoning

The two-process architecture licenses diagnostic inference (locate an error at one of four stages — under-recruited, mis-aimed, over-recruited, mis-trained — and read its cause off its position), interventionist prediction (each stage has a named lever that moves only its error class; a mismatched lever is inert), boundary-drawing (the recruitment gradient runs from impulsive to paralysed, prescribing opposite remedies), and order-of-events prediction (fast-first, selective recruitment, load-dependent failure).
