Elaboration Likelihood¶
Predict the route by which a persuasive message changes attitudes from the recipient's motivation and ability — a central route scrutinising argument quality when both are high, a peripheral route riding surface cues otherwise — with central-route attitudes proving far more durable.
Core Idea¶
The Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM), introduced by Petty and Cacioppo in the early 1980s, is a dual-pathway theory of attitude change that predicts the route by which a persuasive message produces attitude change as a function of the recipient's motivation and ability to process it carefully. When both motivation and ability are high — when the topic is personally relevant, the recipient is not cognitively loaded, and the context permits deliberation — processing proceeds via the central route: the recipient scrutinises argument quality, generates counter-arguments, and forms an attitude grounded in the substantive reasoning. When either motivation or ability is low, processing defaults to the peripheral route: the recipient evaluates the message by surface cues — source attractiveness, apparent expertise, message length, emotional tone — and forms an attitude indexed to those cues rather than to the argument's content.
The model's distinctive prediction is not that central and peripheral routes differ in which attitudes they produce but in the durability of the attitudes produced: central-route attitudes are resistant to subsequent counter-persuasion and are better predictors of behaviour, because they are grounded in integrated reasoning the recipient generated rather than in cues that can be countered or replaced; peripheral-route attitudes are acquired cheaply but are labile — a competing cue, a counter-source, or changed context easily flips them. The decision about which route to target is therefore a structural design choice between durability and acquisition cost.

What It Is Not¶
- Not the claim that good arguments always persuade. Argument quality moves attitudes only on the central route, taken when motivation and ability are both high; delivered to a low-motivation or low-ability audience, a strong argument is wasted while a credible surface cue lands. Whether argument scrutiny does any work is conditional on the route, set by the recipient.
- Not a model of which attitudes the two routes produce. The distinctive prediction is not that central and peripheral routes yield different attitudes but that they yield attitudes of different durability — central-route attitudes resist counter-persuasion and predict behavior, peripheral-route attitudes are labile. Two routes can produce the same attitude that then behaves very differently under later pressure.
- Not a claim that the central route produces more change. Magnitude of immediate change and durability are separate axes: two messages can shift attitudes equally on a post-test and diverge only afterward. The peripheral route can win on immediate magnitude while losing on persistence; "more persuasion" is not what distinguishes the routes.
- Not the dual-process distinction itself. The central/peripheral split is a model-specific instance of the broader effortful-versus-cue-driven dual-process pattern (System ½, heuristic-systematic, type-1/type-2), keyed here to persuasion. The portable structure belongs to the dual-process parent; ELM adds route-selection-by-motivation-and-ability and the durability asymmetry.
- Not a verdict that the central route is always the better target. Route choice is an explicit tradeoff between resistant-but-effortful and cheap-but-labile acquisition. Where the changed attitude need only register now, the peripheral route is the rational choice; the central route is preferred only when the attitude must survive later counter-persuasion and guide behavior.
Scope of Application¶
The Elaboration Likelihood Model lives across the persuasion and attitude-change subfields of social psychology and the communication research adjacent to it — wherever a recipient with some motivation and ability forms an attitude from a persuasive message; its reach is that family of settings, and the broader effortful-versus-cue-driven dual-process pattern beyond persuasion (System ½, heuristic-systematic) is the dual_process parent's to carry, not ELM's.
- Persuasion research — the home turf: with Chaiken's heuristic-systematic model, the standard frame for how source, message, and audience factors combine to produce attitude change of differing durability.
- Health communication — campaigns whose changed attitude must survive later counter-pressure (smoking cessation, vaccine uptake), where the durability prediction is the design rationale for pushing recipients onto the central route.
- Marketing and advertising — the informational-ad (central) versus image/cue-ad (peripheral) distinction and the high- versus low-involvement product choice.
- Political communication — ballot-issue framing and debate analysis drawing on the same central/peripheral split keyed to voter involvement.
Clarity¶
The model's clarifying force is that it resolves a puzzle that long made the persuasion literature look inconsistent: why argument quality drives attitude change in some studies and barely matters in others. Without the central/peripheral distinction, those results read as conflicting findings about whether good arguments persuade. ELM reframes them as the same finding seen under different processing conditions — argument quality moves attitudes only when the recipient travels the central route, and which route is taken is set by motivation and ability. That converts a contradiction in the data into a structured prediction, and gives the researcher a sharp diagnostic question: not "does this message persuade?" but "under this audience's motivation and ability, which route will process it, and therefore will argument scrutiny or surface cues carry the work?"
The model also separates two properties of a persuasion outcome that a single notion of "persuasive power" conflates: the magnitude of attitude change a message produces and the durability of the attitude it leaves behind. Two messages can shift attitudes equally on a post-test yet differ entirely in what happens next, because a central-route attitude is grounded in reasoning the recipient generated and resists later counter-persuasion, while a peripheral-route attitude rides on cues that a competing cue can dislodge. Making durability a separate axis from immediate effect turns the practitioner's choice of route into an explicit structural tradeoff — cheap, labile acquisition versus effortful, resistant acquisition — rather than an undifferentiated push for "more persuasion," and it makes the right route depend on whether the changed attitude must merely register now or survive later pressure and predict behavior.
Manages Complexity¶
The persuasion literature before ELM is a sprawl of partial and conflicting findings: in some studies argument quality drives attitude change and source attractiveness barely matters; in others the reverse; message length, expertise cues, emotional tone, and personal relevance each help here and do nothing there; and the attitudes produced sometimes stick and sometimes evaporate, with no rule for which. Catalogued variable by variable, every source factor, message factor, and audience factor seems to carry its own unpredictable main effect, and the field reads as an inconsistent pile of "what persuades" results.
ELM compresses that pile to two recipient parameters — motivation and ability to process the message carefully — whose joint state selects which of two routes does the work. Instead of tracking the independent effect of each message and source variable, the analyst tracks just motivation and ability, reads off the route (central when both are high, peripheral when either is low), and the route tells which class of variables is live: argument quality on the central route, surface cues on the peripheral. The apparent contradiction dissolves into one regularity — argument quality moves attitudes only when the recipient travels the central route — so a result where good arguments did nothing is no longer a counterexample but a low-motivation-or-ability case correctly predicted to ride on cues.
The same two parameters fix a second readout the field had conflated into a single "persuasive power": the durability of the resulting attitude. The route that produced the change determines what happens next — central-route attitudes, grounded in self-generated reasoning, resist counter-persuasion and predict behavior; peripheral-route attitudes, indexed to cues, are labile and easily flipped. So the branch structure carries both the magnitude of immediate change and its persistence, read off the same route assignment, and the practitioner's design choice becomes an explicit two-way tradeoff — cheap, labile acquisition via the peripheral route versus effortful, resistant acquisition via the central — selected by setting motivation and ability rather than by pushing undifferentiated harder. The move is from an inconsistent catalog of per-variable persuasion effects to two audience parameters that select a route and let both which-variables-matter and how-durable-the-result-is be read off it.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The Elaboration Likelihood Model licenses a set of reasoning moves by which the persuasion researcher predicts which message features will work and how lasting the result will be, all from two recipient parameters that select a processing route. The foundational move is route prediction from motivation and ability. Given an audience and context, the researcher reasons to the route before asking about the message: when both motivation (driven by personal relevance and involvement) and ability (driven by knowledge, freedom from cognitive load, and a context that permits deliberation) are high, processing travels the central route; when either is low, it defaults to the peripheral route. The inference runs from two audience states to which class of message features will carry the work, so the researcher forecasts the processing pathway from the recipient rather than from the persuasive content.
A second move is predicting which message variables are live from the route. Having assigned the route, the researcher reasons that argument quality moves attitudes only on the central route, while surface cues — source attractiveness, apparent expertise, message length, emotional tone — carry the work on the peripheral route. This converts the analyst's question from "does this message persuade?" to "under this audience's motivation and ability, will argument scrutiny or surface cues do the persuading?", and it predicts that a strong argument delivered to a low-motivation or low-ability audience will be wasted while a credible cue will land — a prediction read off the route, not off the variable in isolation.
A third move is diagnostic dissolution of apparent contradictions in persuasion data. Confronted with studies where argument quality drove attitude change and others where it barely mattered, the researcher reasons that these are not conflicting findings about whether good arguments persuade but the same regularity seen under different processing conditions: a result where good arguments did nothing is a low-motivation-or-ability case correctly predicted to ride on cues. The surface inconsistency is attributed to unmeasured variation in route, so the researcher reinterprets a seeming counterexample as a confirming instance once the audience's motivation and ability are taken into account.
A fourth move is predicting durability as an axis separate from immediate effect. The researcher reasons that the route which produced a change determines what happens next: central-route attitudes, grounded in self-generated reasoning, resist later counter-persuasion and predict behavior, while peripheral-route attitudes, indexed to cues, are labile and easily flipped by a competing cue, counter-source, or changed context. This licenses the prediction that two messages producing equal change on a post-test will diverge under subsequent pressure, so the researcher forecasts not only how much an attitude moves now but whether it will survive — reading durability off the route rather than off the magnitude of immediate change.
A fifth move is interventionist route engineering as an explicit durability-versus-cost tradeoff. Treating route selection as a design choice, the researcher reasons that to instill a durable, behavior-predictive attitude one must push the audience onto the central route — raise personal relevance, reduce distraction and load, invite deliberation — accepting the higher effort of acquisition, whereas to achieve cheap immediate change one targets the peripheral route with strong cues, accepting lability. The predicted effects of the two strategies differ in kind, so the practitioner selects the route by whether the changed attitude must merely register now or must resist later counter-persuasion and guide behavior, rather than pushing undifferentiated harder for "more persuasion."
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within social psychology and the communication research adjacent to it the model transfers as mechanism, because every setting it travels to is the same substrate: a recipient with some motivation and ability forming an attitude from a persuasive message. The full apparatus carries — route prediction from motivation × ability, the live-variable assignment (argument quality central, surface cues peripheral), the durability-versus-magnitude split, and the route-engineering tradeoff. In persuasion research it is, with Chaiken's heuristic-systematic model, the standard frame for how source, message, and audience factors combine. In health communication it underwrites campaigns whose changed attitude must survive later counter-pressure (smoking cessation, vaccine uptake), where the durability prediction is the design rationale for pushing the central route. In marketing and advertising it grounds the informational-ad (central) versus image/cue-ad (peripheral) distinction and the high- versus low-involvement product choice. In political communication ballot-issue framing and debate analysis draw on the same central/peripheral split. Across these the recipient is the same kind of attitude-forming agent, so the route logic and the intervention vocabulary port without translation; only the message topic changes.
Beyond the attitude-change substrate the transfer is best understood as a shared abstract mechanism — but the mechanism that recurs is the parent, not ELM's own named machinery. The central/peripheral distinction is a model-specific instance of the much broader dual-process pattern: an effortful, capacity-limited, deliberative route versus a cheap, cue-driven, automatic one. That general structure genuinely recurs across domains and theories — Kahneman's System 1 / System 2, the automatic/controlled distinction, Evans–Stanovich type-1/type-2 reasoning, Chaiken's heuristic-systematic model — as co-instances of one dual-process abstraction. So when the cross-domain lesson is wanted, it should be carried by the dual_process parent, not by "elaboration likelihood." What is home-bound — what does not survive extraction — is everything specifically ELM: motivation × ability selecting a route, the central route scrutinizing argument quality, the peripheral route riding source and cue, and above all the durability asymmetry (central-route attitudes resist counter-persuasion and predict behavior) that is the model's distinctive prediction within persuasion. This shows even where the model looks like it transfers: invoking "elaboration likelihood" in instructional design is really borrowing the dual-process parent under ELM's vocabulary, not porting ELM proper, because there is no persuasive message, no attitude, and no counter-persuasion-resistance to predict. And stripped of "elaboration," "central route," and "peripheral cue," what remains is either the dual-process picture (which already has a prime home) or the near-vacuous "people think harder when they care more." The honest boundary: as mechanism the model reaches across the whole family of persuasion and attitude-change settings; beyond them the recurring structure is the dual-process parent's to carry, while ELM's route-selection-and-durability machinery stays a domain-specific instance (see Structural Core vs. Domain Accent).
Examples¶
Canonical¶
Petty, Cacioppo, and Goldman's 1981 experiment is the model's defining demonstration. College students heard a message advocating that their university institute a senior comprehensive exam. The researchers crossed three factors: personal relevance (the exam would begin next year, making it highly relevant to these students, versus in ten years, making it irrelevant to them), argument quality (strong, well-evidenced arguments versus weak ones), and source expertise (a professor's report versus a high-school class project). The result was the signature crossover. Under high relevance, students' attitudes tracked argument quality — strong arguments persuaded, weak ones did not — while source expertise mattered little. Under low relevance, the pattern inverted: argument quality barely registered, and students instead deferred to the expert source. Motivation, manipulated through relevance, determined which feature of the identical message did the persuading.
Mapped back: The relevance manipulation is the recipient's motivation, and its joint state with ability acts as the route selector. High-relevance students traveling by argument quality exemplify the central route scrutinizing substantive reasoning; low-relevance students deferring to the professor-versus-student source exemplify the peripheral route riding a surface expertise cue. The same message persuading via different features under different motivation is the model's core prediction realized.
Applied / In Practice¶
Health-communication designers use the model to build attitudes that must survive later pressure, as in smoking-cessation and vaccine-uptake campaigns. Because a health attitude formed today will be attacked tomorrow — by peer influence, addiction, tobacco or anti-vaccine messaging — designers deliberately engineer central-route processing rather than settling for a quick cue-based lift. They raise personal relevance (personalized risk framing, "this is about you and your family"), reduce cognitive load so the audience can deliberate, and supply substantive, evidence-based arguments the recipient can rehearse and internalize, so the resulting attitude is grounded in the person's own reasoning. The design rationale is explicitly that a peripheral-route attitude built on an attractive spokesperson would be cheap but labile, whereas a central-route attitude will resist counter-persuasion and better predict actual quitting or vaccinating behavior.
Mapped back: The whole strategy turns on the durability asymmetry — central-route attitudes resist later counter-persuasion and predict behavior, which is exactly what a health campaign needs. Deliberately raising relevance and reducing load to force central processing is the route-engineering tradeoff, accepting higher acquisition effort for resistance. Manipulating the recipient's motivation and ability to steer toward the central route is the model's interventionist move applied in the field.
Structural Tensions¶
T1: Two clean routes versus one continuum (a dichotomy over a gradient). ELM's predictive economy comes from a near-binary route selection: both parameters high routes to the central route, either low defaults to the peripheral, and from that assignment the live variables and the durability follow. But the model's own elaboration continuum, and decades of critique, hold that processing is graded and the routes can operate in parallel — a source cue can bias central scrutiny, and argument quality can itself function as a peripheral cue when a variable plays multiple roles. The tension is that the crisp two-route dichotomy which makes the model forecastable flattens a continuum and hides cross-route interactions, so a mid-elaboration case where a single variable does double duty is exactly where the clean route assignment misleads. Diagnostic: Is processing genuinely at one route pole, or mid-continuum where a variable plays multiple roles and the binary central-versus-peripheral assignment misdescribes what is happening?
T2: Route predicted from parameters versus route inferred from outcome (a falsifiability strain). The model's intended logic runs forward — measure motivation and ability, predict the route, then predict which variables work. Its most celebrated payoff, dissolving the field's apparent contradictions, depends on this: a null effect of argument quality is reclassified as a low-motivation-or-ability case. But in practice the route is often read backward from the result (argument quality mattered, so it must have been central), and because the durability asymmetry defines the routes and the routes are then invoked to explain durability, the reasoning can circle. The tension is that the same move which rescues the model from counterexamples can render it unfalsifiable when the route is inferred post hoc from whichever variable happened to work. Diagnostic: Was the route predicted ex ante from independently measured motivation and ability, or inferred after the fact from which message feature turned out to persuade?
T3: Durability as the prize versus the central route's unreachability (the better route you often cannot enter). The durability asymmetry valorizes central-route processing — attitudes that resist counter-persuasion and predict behavior — and campaigns are built to engineer it. But the model itself insists route choice is a tradeoff, and the central route is gated by an audience motivation and ability the persuader frequently cannot raise: a genuinely low-involvement product or a disengaged audience will not elaborate no matter how strong the arguments, and forcing central processing is costly and often infeasible. The tension is that the route with the superior, durable outcome is precisely the one most often out of reach, so the durability advantage can be a prize the persuader cannot claim, and the peripheral route is not merely a cheaper option but sometimes the only available one. Diagnostic: Does this attitude need to survive later counter-persuasion (central worth its cost), and can this audience even be moved onto the central route — or is peripheral the rational and only feasible choice?
T4: Durable acceptance versus durable resistance (central-route processing cuts both ways). Central-route attitudes are prized because self-generated reasoning makes them resistant and behavior-predictive. But the same elaboration that produces durable acceptance of a message that survives scrutiny produces durable resistance to one that fails it: a high-elaboration recipient generates counter-arguments, so a weak or mistrusted message met on the central route can boomerang into an entrenched, counter-argued rejection that is every bit as resistant as an acceptance would have been. The tension is that engineering central processing is a bet — it raises the ceiling on durable persuasion and simultaneously raises the risk of durable backfire — whereas the peripheral route, cheap and labile, at least fails softly. Diagnostic: Will central-route scrutiny of this message yield durable acceptance, or durable resistance because the recipient's own counter-arguing wins — and is the message strong enough to survive the elaboration it invites?
T5: Autonomy versus reduction (a persuasion model or an instance of dual-process). The Elaboration Likelihood Model is a named theory with specific cargo — motivation × ability selecting a route, the central route scrutinizing argument quality, the peripheral route riding source and cue, and above all the durability asymmetry that is its distinctive prediction — and across persuasion, health communication, marketing, and political communication it travels as full mechanism, one attitude-forming recipient throughout. But the structure that recurs beyond attitude change is the parent dual_process: an effortful, capacity-limited, deliberative route versus a cheap, cue-driven, automatic one, of which System 1/System 2, the heuristic-systematic model, and type-1/type-2 reasoning are co-instances. Invoking "elaboration likelihood" in instructional design borrows the dual-process parent under ELM's vocabulary, because there is no persuasive message, no attitude, and no counter-persuasion-resistance to predict. Diagnostic: Resolve toward dual_process when the lesson is effortful-versus-cue-driven processing in general; toward the Elaboration Likelihood Model only for attitude change from a persuasive message, with its route selection and durability asymmetry.
Structural–Framed Character¶
The Elaboration Likelihood Model sits in the mixed band, leaning toward the framed side of it — a real dual-process mechanism, but a named theory bound to a human communicative practice and dressed in proprietary persuasion vocabulary. On evaluative weight it reads structural: the model describes which route processes a message and how durable the result is; it renders no verdict and calls neither route good nor bad (the peripheral route is the rational choice when durability is not needed). On human-practice-bound it leans framed: the model is constituted by the practice of persuasion and attitude change — there is no route to select, no argument-quality to scrutinise, and above all no counter-persuasion-resistance to predict, absent a recipient forming an attitude from a persuasive message; strip the persuasion setting and the machinery has nothing to grip, which is why invoking "elaboration likelihood" in instructional design borrows the parent rather than porting the model. Institutional origin points framed: ELM is a named theoretical artifact of social psychology (Petty and Cacioppo), and its distinctive furniture — the central/peripheral labels, the motivation×ability route selector, the durability asymmetry — are distinctions drawn inside that theory, not substrate-neutral form. Vocab-travels fails: "central route," "peripheral cue," "elaboration," and "durability of attitude" are pinned to the attitude-change substrate. And import-vs-recognize splits as the entry says — within persuasion, health communication, marketing, and political communication the same mechanism is recognised intact, one attitude-forming recipient throughout, but beyond attitude change the recurrence is the parent's, not ELM's.
The portable structural skeleton is an effortful, capacity-limited deliberative route versus a cheap, cue-driven automatic one, selected by the processor's motivation and ability. That pattern is genuinely substrate-spanning and is exactly what ELM instantiates from its umbrella prime dual_process — of which System 1/System 2, the heuristic-systematic model, and type-1/type-2 reasoning are co-instances — not what makes "elaboration likelihood" itself travel. The cross-domain reach belongs to dual_process; the domain-accented specifics that stay home are the persuasion-keyed route content (argument quality on the central route, source and cue on the peripheral) and the model's distinctive prediction, the durability asymmetry. Its character: an evaluatively neutral dual-process mechanism, structural in the effortful-versus-cue-driven skeleton it borrows from its parent, but held at mixed-leaning-framed by a named persuasion theory whose route-selection-and-durability apparatus is attitude-change furniture that does not lift.
Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
This section decides why elaboration likelihood is a domain-specific abstraction and not a prime, by separating the thin dual-process skeleton it shares with its parent from the persuasion machinery that stays home.
What is skeletal (could lift toward a cross-domain prime). Strip the persuasion setting away and a thin relational structure survives: a processor confronting an input can handle it by one of two routes — an effortful, capacity-limited, deliberative route that engages the input's substance, or a cheap, automatic route that rides surface cues — and the processor's motivation and ability jointly select which route runs. Doubled with it, a second portable piece: the substance-engaging route yields a more stable, better-anchored result than the cue-driven one. Both pieces are abstract and genuinely substrate-portable — the two-route selection recurs as System 1 / System 2, the automatic/controlled distinction, heuristic-systematic processing, and type-1/type-2 reasoning, which are co-instances of one dual-process abstraction rather than analogies of ELM. Precisely because it recurs as mechanism, this skeleton is carried by the parent the entry instantiates, dual_process. But it is the core elaboration likelihood shares, not what makes it distinctive.
What is domain-bound. Almost everything that makes the model elaboration likelihood in particular is persuasion-theory furniture that does not survive extraction. The input is specifically a persuasive message carrying both argument content and surface cues (source attractiveness, apparent expertise, message length, emotional tone); the output is an attitude; the two routes are the central route that scrutinizes argument quality and generates counter-arguments and the peripheral route that indexes the attitude to cues; and — the model's distinctive prediction — the two routes differ not in which attitude they produce but in its durability, central-route attitudes resisting counter-persuasion and predicting behavior while peripheral-route attitudes are labile. That durability asymmetry is the worked payoff, and it, along with the route-engineering tradeoff and the empirical cases (health-campaign design, informational-versus-image advertising, ballot-issue framing), is specific to a recipient forming an attitude from a message. The decisive test: remove the persuasive message, the attitude, and the counter-persuasion pressure and it is no longer elaboration likelihood — there is no route to select, no argument-quality to scrutinize, and above all no counter-persuasion-resistance to predict. What is left is either the bare dual-process picture or the near-vacuous "people think harder when they care more."
Why this does not clear the prime bar. A prime's vocabulary travels and its cross-domain transfer is recognition of the same mechanism, not analogy. Elaboration likelihood's transfer is bimodal. Within attitude change it travels intact as mechanism — persuasion research, health communication, marketing, and political communication are all the same substrate (a recipient with some motivation and ability forming an attitude from a message), so the route selection, the live-variable assignment, the durability asymmetry, and the route-engineering tradeoff port without translation, only the message topic changing. Beyond attitude change it does not port as ELM at all: invoking "elaboration likelihood" in instructional design is really borrowing the dual-process parent under ELM's vocabulary, because there is no message, no attitude, and no counter-persuasion-resistance for the model's distinctive machinery to grip — that is recognition of the parent's mechanism dressed in ELM's clothes, not transfer of ELM. And when the bare structural lesson is needed cross-domain — effortful-versus-cue-driven processing selected by motivation and ability — it is already carried, in more general form, by the prime elaboration likelihood instantiates: dual_process, of which System 1/System 2, heuristic-systematic, and type-1/type-2 reasoning are the substrate-neutral co-instances. The cross-domain reach belongs to that parent; "elaboration likelihood," as named, carries persuasion baggage — route content and the durability asymmetry — that should stay home, which is why it clears the domain-specific bar for social persuasion but not the prime bar.

The Elaboration Likelihood Model is dual-process theory specialized to persuasive attitude change, with motivation and ability selecting central or peripheral processing and route-dependent durability.It inherits low-effort and effortful pathways plus selective recruitment, then fixes the input to persuasive messages and adds the durability asymmetry. Dual-process Theory supplies the genus: Models cognition as the interaction of a fast, automatic, associative process (System 1) supplying default responses and a slow, effortful, rule-based process (System 2) selectively recruited to endorse or override them under conflict, novelty, or stakes. Elaboration Likelihood preserves that general structure while adding its differentia: Predict the route by which a persuasive message changes attitudes from the recipient's motivation and ability — a central route scrutinising argument quality when both are high, a peripheral route riding surface cues otherwise — with central-route attitudes proving far more durable. The parent can occur without those added commitments, whereas removing the parent structure leaves no basis for classifying the child as this subtype. That asymmetry establishes subsumption rather than mere association.

- Heuristic-Systematic Model (HSM). Chaiken's parallel dual-process theory of persuasion — systematic processing weighs message content, heuristic processing rides simple decision rules ("experts are right"). It is a sibling instance of the same dual-process parent, developed alongside ELM, and the two are near-interchangeable frames; ELM's distinctive addition is the route selector (motivation × ability) and the durability asymmetry. Tell: does the account foreground simple heuristic cue-rules run in parallel with content processing (HSM), or a route chosen by motivation and ability with a durability prediction attached (ELM)?
- System 1 / System 2 (dual-process reasoning). Kahneman's general fast-automatic versus slow-deliberative distinction, and its type-1/type-2 cousins. This is the parent umbrella, not a persuasion model — it has no persuasive message, no attitude, no counter-persuasion resistance. ELM is the persuasion-keyed instance. Tell: is the claim about effortful-versus-automatic processing of any input (System ½), or specifically about attitude change from a message with a durability prediction (ELM)?
- Central route (subtype, part-whole). The effortful, argument-scrutinizing half of ELM's pair, not a rival concept — one of the two routes the model selects between. Confusing "elaboration likelihood" with "central-route processing" mistakes one branch for the whole dual-route model. Tell: are you naming the deliberative processing branch alone (central route), or the full motivation×ability model that assigns which branch runs (ELM)?
- Cognitive dissonance. Festinger's theory of attitude change driven by internal inconsistency the person resolves by shifting an attitude. ELM concerns attitude change from an external persuasive message routed by processing depth, not self-generated tension from held-belief conflict. Tell: is the attitude moving to relieve an internal contradiction (dissonance) or in response to an incoming message processed centrally or peripherally (ELM)?
- Attitude durability / attitude strength (as a standalone construct). The property of an attitude resisting change and predicting behavior. ELM does not merely describe durability — it predicts it from the route that formed the attitude, making durability the dependent variable of route selection. Tell: are you measuring how resistant an attitude is (durability construct), or explaining that resistance by the central-versus-peripheral route that produced it (ELM's distinctive prediction)?
- The dual-process parent (umbrella). The substrate-neutral skeleton ELM instantiates — an effortful, capacity-limited deliberative route versus a cheap, cue-driven automatic one, selected by the processor's motivation and ability. This is what carries cross-domain (into instructional design, judgment, etc.) once the persuasion specifics are dropped. Tell: strip the message, the attitude, and the durability prediction and what remains is generic effortful-versus-cue processing — the parent, not ELM.
