Elaboration Likelihood¶
Predict the route by which a persuasive message changes attitudes from the recipient's motivation and ability — a central route scrutinising argument quality when both are high, a peripheral route riding surface cues otherwise — with central-route attitudes proving far more durable.
Core Idea¶
The Elaboration Likelihood Model (Petty and Cacioppo, early 1980s) is a dual-pathway theory of attitude change predicting the route a persuasive message takes from the recipient's motivation and ability to process it. When both are high, processing runs the central route: the recipient scrutinises argument quality and forms an attitude grounded in reasoning. When either is low, it defaults to the peripheral route: evaluation by surface cues. The distinctive prediction is durability — central-route attitudes resist counter-persuasion and predict behavior; peripheral ones are cheap but labile.
Scope of Application¶
The Elaboration Likelihood Model lives across the persuasion and attitude-change subfields of social psychology and adjacent communication research — wherever a recipient forms an attitude from a persuasive message.

Clarity¶
The model resolves a puzzle that made the persuasion literature look inconsistent: why argument quality drives attitude change in some studies and barely matters in others. ELM reframes them as the same finding under different processing conditions — argument quality moves attitudes only on the central route, and route is set by motivation and ability. It also separates two properties a single notion of "persuasive power" conflates: the magnitude of change and the durability of the resulting attitude, turning route choice into an explicit tradeoff rather than an undifferentiated push for more persuasion.
Manages Complexity¶
The pre-ELM literature was a sprawl of conflicting per-variable findings — each source, message, and audience factor seeming to carry its own unpredictable effect. ELM compresses that pile to two recipient parameters, motivation and ability, whose joint state selects a route that tells which class of variables is live. The apparent contradiction dissolves into one regularity. The same two parameters fix a second readout the field conflated — durability — so the branch structure carries both immediate magnitude and persistence, and the design choice becomes a two-way tradeoff selected by setting the two parameters.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The model licenses route prediction from motivation and ability, a live-variable prediction from the route (argument quality central, cues peripheral), a diagnostic dissolution of apparent contradictions in persuasion data (recasting a null argument-quality result as a correctly-predicted low-motivation case), a durability prediction on an axis separate from immediate effect, and an interventionist route-engineering move treating route selection as an explicit durability-versus-cost tradeoff — raising relevance and reducing load to push the central route.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within social psychology and adjacent communication research the model transfers as mechanism, because every setting is the same substrate — a recipient forming an attitude from a message — so the route logic, live-variable assignment, durability split, and route-engineering tradeoff port without translation across persuasion research, health communication, marketing, and political communication; only the topic changes. Beyond the attitude-change substrate the recurring structure is the parent, not ELM: the central/peripheral split is one instance of the broader dual_process pattern (System ½, heuristic-systematic, type-1/type-2). Invoking ELM in instructional design borrows that parent under ELM's vocabulary; the route-selection and durability machinery stays home.
