Embodied bilingual language¶
The hypothesis that second-language comprehension recruits perceptual, motor and emotional simulations grounded in bodily experience.
Core Idea¶
L2 embodiment can vary with proficiency, age of acquisition, context and emotional distance, and evidence must distinguish genuine sensorimotor grounding from translation, lexical association and task priming. A second-language word or construction reactivates modality-specific representations established through action and perception, which then influences response time, movement, memory or physiological measures. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
