Endophora¶
Text-internal reference in which an expression obtains its interpretation from another element of the surrounding discourse.
Core Idea¶
Endophora covers anaphoric reference backward to an antecedent and cataphoric reference forward to a later expression, contrasted with reference to the external situation. Pronouns, demonstratives, ellipsis, and definite descriptions direct the interpreter to a discourse representation already introduced or subsequently supplied. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of discourse linguistics. It is the domain-specific identity determined by the referential target is licensed by an identifiable expression or discourse entity within the same textual context.
