Epideictic Rhetoric

The classical genre of present-occasion discourse whose work is to praise or blame — displaying and reaffirming a community's shared values before a witnessing audience, thereby manufacturing the value premises that deliberative and forensic argument later draw upon.

Core Idea

Epideictic rhetoric is one of Aristotle's three genres of public discourse — alongside deliberative (future decisions) and forensic (past acts under judgment). Oriented toward the present, its defining function is to praise or blame: to affirm and strengthen the values a community already shares, rather than move it toward a decision or verdict. Funeral orations, encomia, and panegyrics are canonical instances, the audience witnessing rather than voting. Perelman and Burke revalued it as foundational: it creates and renews the value premises that deliberative and forensic rhetoric later draw upon.

Clarity

Naming the genre dissolves the misreading that all public discourse is decision-oriented, so a funeral oration looks vacuous. It lets the analyst read a present-occasion address on its own praise-blame axis, and — via Perelman and Burke — makes visible that deliberative and forensic argument run on value premises they do not themselves establish.

Manages Complexity

A heterogeneous pile of public discourse compresses to two readable parameters — temporal orientation and the audience's office — which jointly fix the genre.
