Expanding Earth¶
An obsolete geophysical hypothesis that continental separation resulted from a substantial increase in Earth's radius or volume, superseded by plate tectonics and modern geodesy.
Core Idea¶
The expanding-Earth hypothesis attributes major continental and oceanic change to growth of the planet's volume. Historical versions proposed constant-mass decompression or mass addition so a smaller globe's contiguous continents separated as surface area increased, but no adequate mechanism or measurements support the required expansion. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of history of geology. It is superseded radius-growth explanation for continental drift before acceptance of plate tectonics.
Scope of Application¶
Expanding Earth belongs to history of geology and is useful where the analyst can specify Earth's radius, mass and interior, continents and ocean basins, geological time, proposed expansion mechanism, paleomagnetic and seafloor evidence, plate motions, satellite geodesy and competing plate-tectonic model, then evaluate the hypothesis requires large secular increase in Earth radius as the primary cause of continental separation, not ordinary thermal expansion or local crustal deformation. The scope is broad within that domain but bounded by the need for the hypothesis requires large secular increase in Earth radius as the primary cause of continental separation, not ordinary thermal expansion or local crustal deformation. This entry documents a rejected historical hypothesis and does not endorse Earth expansion.
Clarity¶
The abstraction clarifies a crowded vocabulary by making the hypothesis requires large secular increase in Earth radius as the primary cause of continental separation, not ordinary thermal expansion or local crustal deformation the center of the account. A claim should name the carrier, the governing operation or relation, the applicable assumptions, and the recognition test. A bare label is insufficient because the name Expanding Earth can be used for a formal identity, an implementation, or a neighboring result unless carrier and convention are stated.
Manages Complexity¶
Without the abstraction, an analyst must reason directly over many local details: the carrier roles, admissibility assumptions, competing conventions, derived invariants, boundary cases, and proof or validation obligations specific to Expanding Earth. Expanding Earth compresses them into the roles in the structural signature. That compression permits comparison across instances without erasing the variables that determine validity. It also exposes which details may be varied safely and which are constitutive.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Identify the carrier. State what the elements, states, objects, or observations are: Earth's radius, mass and interior, continents and ocean basins, geological time, proposed expansion mechanism, paleomagnetic and seafloor evidence, plate motions, satellite geodesy and competing plate-tectonic model. Reject examples whose alleged carrier belongs to a different problem. 2. Lock the constitutive rule. Express the hypothesis requires large secular increase in Earth radius as the primary cause of continental separation, not ordinary thermal expansion or local crustal deformation independently of one notation or implementation.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Knowledge transfers strongly among subfields of history of geology because they reuse Earth's radius, mass and interior, continents and ocean basins, geological time, proposed expansion mechanism, paleomagnetic and seafloor evidence, plate motions, satellite geodesy and competing plate-tectonic model, Historical versions proposed constant-mass decompression or mass addition so a smaller globe's contiguous continents separated as surface area increased, but no adequate mechanism or measurements support the required expansion., and type the carrier, state every parameter and convention in the definition, test that the hypothesis requires large secular increase in Earth radius as the primary cause of continental separation, not ordinary thermal expansion or local crustal deformation, compare the nearest accepted identity, and report counterexamples, uncertainty, and limiting cases.
