Core Idea

In Goffman's account, face is the positive social value a person claims through a line others attribute to them in an encounter. Face-work is what participants do to avoid or repair incidents that would make the line hard to maintain. It is relational, not a private stock of self-esteem or an anatomical feature.[^ref-266aae9a528d]

Scope of Application

Goffman's 1955 essay analyzes avoidance and corrective processes in face-to-face interaction. Cardon's later study interviewed 34 Chinese and eight American businesspersons and classified 229 reported business incidents as giving, protecting, vying for or not considering face. The latter is a situated business taxonomy, not proof that the two accounts are identical across cultures.[ref-266aae9a528d][ref-3a3ab93537d8]

Clarity

Goffman's corrective model has a recognized offense, an offering, acceptance and thanks, but the sequence may vary; offended participants may even allow an offering before an overt challenge. Cardon's original article adds incident-level contrasts. On p. 29, Mr. Yang reports arranging a dinner introduction for an unconnected friend, recommending him to a manager, and the friend subsequently selling to that manager. Cardon classifies the friend's bid through a go-between as vying for face; Yang says his sponsorship gave his friend face. No prior offense or Goffmanian apology was involved. On pp. 29–30, Ms. Zhang recalls a vice president greeting foreign counterparts ceremonially and then bargaining frankly, surprising them. That is a boundary against coding every direct negotiation as face loss. Both are interviewee reports, not observed transcripts or independently verified results.[ref-86691e82d74d][ref-3a3ab93537d8]

Manages Complexity

Ask what line was projected, who recognized it, what incident endangered it and what participants did next. This explains why a private correction and a public rebuke can have different effects even if they convey the same fact. It also avoids treating tact as automatically virtuous: leaving an error unaddressed may protect a line yet impose an informational cost.[^ref-266aae9a528d]

Abstract Reasoning

Remove the audience and only private confidence remains; remove the line and there is no specific face claim. Direct correction versus preserving a viable public line is a real situated tension. The mechanism is not a universal arithmetic of compliments and insults; local relationships determine which actions count as respect, threat or repair.[ref-266aae9a528d][ref-3a3ab93537d8]

Knowledge Transfer

The role map can guide analysis of business meetings or online exchanges, but each setting needs evidence of its own statuses, audience and response practices. Chinese business face categories should not be equated automatically with all of Goffman's ritual processes: Yang's sponsorship grants access, while Zhang's case shows that ceremonial face-work may be set aside during bargaining. This entry is unparented because no live necessary interactional-standing genus is verified.[^ref-3a3ab93537d8]

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space

Face sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (72nd percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
