False Fame Effect¶
The finding that a previously seen non-famous name is later misjudged as famous — because prior exposure produces real processing fluency that, once the memory of its source is lost, gets misattributed to fame rather than to having been seen.
Core Idea¶
The false fame effect is the finding, established by Jacoby and colleagues in the late 1980s, that a name encountered in one context — a study list presented as a set of non-famous people — is later judged to be the name of a famous person at a higher rate than a name not previously seen. The mechanism is misattribution of processing fluency: the prior exposure leaves a trace that causes the name to be processed faster and more smoothly at the subsequent test, the perceiver detects that fluency as a felt signal of significance, and — having lost access to the explicit memory of where the name was seen — attributes the fluency to fame rather than to prior exposure. The effect is largest when explicit memory for the study episode is suppressed by a 24-hour delay or by divided attention at test, and it reverses under immediate testing, when participants recognise the name as one from the list and correctly reject it as famous. Providing participants with a source reminder ("some of the names you will see were on the non-famous list you read yesterday") eliminates the effect, confirming that the fluency signal itself is real and correctly detected but is available to multiple attribution categories, with misattribution occurring precisely when the correct source is not independently available. The false fame paradigm is a foundational demonstration within source monitoring research (Marcia Johnson's framework) that recognition is not a unitary process: familiarity (a graded fluency signal arising from prior processing) and recollection (retrieval of episodic detail about when and where an item was encountered) are dissociable components, and errors occur when familiarity is elevated by a source the perceiver cannot access, leaving the fluency to be attributed to whatever salient alternative — in this case, fame — is most contextually available. The same fluency-misattribution mechanism underlies the closely related illusory-truth effect (repeated statements feel truer) and connects the false fame effect to a broader family of implicit-memory demonstrations in which prior exposure shapes subsequent judgment through a route the perceiver does not recognise as exposure.

What It Is Not¶
- Not a lost memory of the encounter. The trace of the prior exposure is intact and doing work — it is what produces the fluency. The failure is at the attribution step: the felt familiarity is reassigned to the wrong source (fame) because recollection of where the name was seen is unavailable. That is why a source reminder, which restores the recollective account, abolishes the effect.
- Not a false or illusory signal. The processing fluency is real and correctly detected; only its interpretation is wrong. The design separates the reality of the signal from the correctness of its attribution, which is exactly why the felt sense of fame should be treated as a signal whose source is in question, not as a faulty perception to be discounted.
- Not mere exposure or the illusory-truth effect. These run the same fluency-misattribution machinery but assign the unaccounted-for fluency to a different category — liking (mere exposure), truth (illusory truth) — rather than fame. They are siblings keyed to different attribution targets, not the same effect.
- Not source amnesia. Source amnesia is forgetting where content was learned while retaining the content; false fame is that forgetting plus an active misattribution of the resulting fluency to a property (fame) the system was not tracking. The added step — assigning the fluency to a salient wrong category — is what makes it the false fame effect rather than plain source forgetting.
- Not any case of a signal attributed to the wrong source. A system that classifies a true item's source incorrectly is exhibiting the live parent

Scope of Application¶
The false fame effect lives across the memory and social-cognition subfields of psychology; its reach is within that domain, confined to a perceiver whose recognition returns a fluency signal dissociable from a source memory. The general use-time source-attribution lesson belongs to its parent reality_monitoring, and the ease signal to processing_fluency, not to this named paradigm.

Clarity¶
The paradigm makes legible a failure of recognition that the everyday notion of memory cannot describe: the problem is not that the trace of an earlier encounter has been lost, but that the trace is intact and is being reattributed to the wrong source. Treating recognition as a single faculty — you either remember something or you don't — leaves no room for a name that is genuinely familiar yet feels famous rather than seen-yesterday. The effect dissolves that confusion by splitting recognition into two dissociable components: familiarity, a graded fluency signal arising from prior processing, and recollection, the retrieval of episodic detail about when and where an item was encountered. Once those are held apart, the illusion becomes intelligible as the specific case where familiarity is elevated but recollection of the source fails, so the fluency is left to be assigned to whatever attribution category is contextually available.
That separation reframes the felt sense of fame from a verdict to be trusted into a signal whose source is in question. The sharper diagnostic question is no longer "is this name famous?" but "what is producing the ease with which I process it, and have I independently established its source?" — which is exactly why a source reminder abolishes the effect: it supplies the missing recollective account so the fluency need not be misread. Crucially, the design separates the reality of the signal from the correctness of its interpretation. The fluency is real and accurately detected; only the attribution is wrong. Holding that distinction lets a researcher locate the breakdown precisely at the attribution step rather than blaming a faulty perceptual trace or general forgetting, and it positions the false fame paradigm as the clean case that anchors the wider source-monitoring account of when fluency gets misassigned.
Manages Complexity¶
A family of memory illusions that look unrelated on their surfaces — a non-famous name judged famous, a repeated claim judged truer, a bystander misidentified as the culprit, an ad-seen product preferred — turn out, once the false fame paradigm is understood, to be one mechanism running through different attribution categories. The effect compresses them by factoring recognition into two dissociable quantities — a graded familiarity (fluency) signal and a recollection of source — and locating every illusion at the same juncture: familiarity is elevated by prior exposure while recollection of where the exposure happened fails, leaving the fluency to be assigned to whatever salient category is contextually available (fame, truth, the crime scene, liking). A researcher then no longer needs a separate theory per illusion; the whole family reduces to a few controlling variables — the strength of the fluency trace, whether the correct source is independently recoverable, and which attribution category the test makes most accessible — and the qualitative outcome follows from them. The same small parameter set predicts when the illusion appears (delay or divided attention that suppresses recollection), when it reverses (immediate test, where recollection wins), and how to abolish it (a source reminder that restores the recollective account), so that a sprawling catalog of fluency-driven misjudgments collapses to one two-signal architecture read through a handful of conditions.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The paradigm licenses inferences that turn on the two-signal split — familiarity versus recollection — and the misattribution juncture between them. Diagnostic: when a perceiver judges a name famous that was in fact merely seen, do not infer that the memory of the encounter was lost (the trace is intact and is doing work) but that the attribution failed — an elevated fluency signal, correctly detected, assigned to the wrong source category because recollection of where the name was seen is unavailable. The felt sense of fame is thereby reclassified from a verdict to be trusted into a signal whose source is in question, and the sharper diagnostic is not "is this name famous?" but "what is producing the ease with which I process it, and have I independently established its source?" The signature is specifically familiarity-high, recollection-failed: a graded fluency present, episodic source absent. From that pattern one reads back the hidden cause — prior exposure via a route the perceiver does not recognize as exposure.
Interventionist: because the breakdown sits at the attribution step and not in the trace, the predicted levers act on whether the correct source is recoverable and on which attribution category the test makes accessible. Supplying a source reminder ("some of these names were on the non-famous list you read yesterday") predicts the effect's elimination — it restores the recollective account so the fluency need not be misread — and this is the cleanest confirmation that the fluency is real and correctly detected, only mis-assigned. Conversely, suppressing recollection while sparing the trace predicts the effect's appearance and growth: a 24-hour delay or divided attention at test should enlarge it, because they weaken recollection without weakening fluency. The mechanism also predicts a reversal: under immediate test, recollection wins, the perceiver recognizes the name as the one from the list, and correctly rejects it as famous — so the same manipulation (prior exposure) flips the sign of the judgment depending on whether recollection is available. A lever that strengthens the trace but does nothing to recoverability of source predicts a larger, not smaller, illusion.
Boundary-drawing: the effect occupies the regime where familiarity is elevated and recollection of source fails and the test makes a salient mis-attribution category available — and it dissolves outside that regime. Where recollection is intact (immediate test, source reminder), there is no illusion; where no prior-exposure trace exists, there is no elevated fluency to misattribute; where the test offers no plausible alternative category, the fluency has nowhere wrong to land. This boundary also separates the false fame paradigm from neighbors by which attribution category the fluency is assigned to while the same two-signal machinery runs: fame here, truth in the illusory-truth effect, the crime scene in eyewitness misidentification, liking in mere exposure. Predictive: from the controlling variables — strength of the fluency trace, recoverability of the correct source, accessibility of the mis-attribution category — one forecasts the qualitative outcome for a new case before running it: predict the illusion under delay or divided attention, predict its reversal under immediate test, predict its abolition under a source reminder, and predict its magnitude to scale with exposure rather than with the property ostensibly being judged.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within the cognitive and social psychology of memory the false fame paradigm transfers as mechanism, and its reach across that domain is exactly the point of the source-monitoring framework it helped found. The same two-signal architecture — a graded familiarity (fluency) signal dissociable from a recollection of source, with error at the attribution juncture — runs through a whole family of illusions, which differ only in which attribution category the unaccounted-for fluency is assigned to: fame here, truth in the illusory-truth effect, the crime scene in eyewitness misidentification ("unconscious transference"), liking in the mere-exposure effect. Because it is one machinery, the diagnostics carry intact (the signature is always familiarity-high, recollection-failed), and so do the interventions and their directions: a 24-hour delay or divided attention enlarges the illusion by suppressing recollection while sparing the trace; an immediate test reverses it because recollection wins; a source reminder abolishes it by restoring the recollective account. Beyond a memory-bearing perceiver the picture is the third category, and the carrier lies in two live parents. A genuinely more general pattern recurs across substrates: a commingled store must classify an item's source at use-time and can assign it wrongly when source-correlated cues mislead. That is reality_monitoring; the true ease signal being interpreted is processing_fluency. What does not travel is the false fame effect's own cargo: it presupposes a perceiver whose recognition machinery returns a fluency signal dissociable from an episodic-source signal, together with the exposure-then-delay-then-judge paradigm, the famous/non-famous categories, and the reversal-under-immediate-test signature. Examples¶
Canonical¶
The defining demonstration is Jacoby, Kelley, Brown, and Jasechko's "Becoming Famous Overnight" study (1989). Participants first read aloud a list of clearly non-famous names (e.g., "Sebastian Weisdorf"). Then, either immediately or after a 24-hour delay, they judged a mixed list — old non-famous names, new non-famous names, and genuinely famous names — for fame. Tested immediately, participants correctly rejected the studied non-famous names as not famous, because they recollected having just seen them on the list. But after the 24-hour delay, those same previously-seen non-famous names were judged famous at a higher rate than new non-famous names: the studied names had "become famous overnight." A source reminder — telling participants the old names came from the non-famous list — eliminated the error, showing the fluency signal was real but merely misassigned.
Mapped back: Reading the study list is the prior exposure laying down a trace; the 24-hour delay is the recollection suppressor that spares that trace. At test the studied name carries the fluency at test, but the failed source attribution leaves it unaccounted for, so it is routed by the misattribution to the salient category — fame. The immediate-test reversal shows the two-signal split (recollection winning early), and the reminder is the source-reminder abolition.
Applied / In Practice¶
The same machinery drives eyewitness "unconscious transference" — a forensically consequential misidentification documented in laboratory and field studies of memory. A bystander merely glimpsed near a crime scene (a store clerk, a person in a train station) can later be picked from a lineup and confidently identified as the perpetrator. The witness's face-recognition system returns genuine familiarity from the earlier innocent encounter, but with the source episode (the ordinary sighting) no longer recollected, the fluency is misattributed to the salient, contextually-primed category: the crime. Because delay and stress at the original event suppress recollection while sparing the perceptual trace, the misidentification grows over time — and warning witnesses that the culprit may not be present, a source-monitoring aid, reduces false picks, mirroring the source-reminder abolition of the laboratory paradigm.
Mapped back: The innocent glimpse of the bystander is the prior exposure; delay and arousal act as the recollection suppressor. The lineup face triggers the fluency at test, and because the mundane source is not recollected — the failed source attribution — it undergoes the misattribution to the salient category, here the crime scene rather than fame. The lineup instruction that mitigates the error is the applied analogue of the source-reminder abolition.
Structural Tensions¶
T1: Real signal versus wrong attribution (the illusion that is not a false perception). The everyday picture of a memory illusion is a faulty trace — the mind misperceiving or fabricating. The false fame effect refuses that reading: the processing fluency is real and correctly detected; only its interpretation is wrong. This is what makes a source reminder abolish the effect — the signal was never in error, so restoring the recollective account lets the same fluency be assigned correctly. The tension is that the felt sense of fame must be treated neither as trustworthy verdict nor as spurious noise to discount, but as a genuine reading whose source is in question. An account that locates the breakdown in the perceptual trace predicts the wrong repair and cannot explain why a mere reminder — adding no new evidence — makes the illusion vanish. Diagnostic: Is the fluency itself being challenged as unreliable, or is only its attributed source in question while the signal is granted as real?
T2: Familiarity versus recollection (the same manipulation, opposite sign). Prior exposure to a name is a single cause that produces opposite judgments depending on one other variable. Under immediate test, recollection wins, the perceiver recognises the name from the list, and correctly rejects it as famous; under a 24-hour delay or divided attention, recollection fails while the trace survives, and the fluency is misread as fame. The two-signal split means the very manipulation that manufactures the illusion can also block it. The tension is that familiarity and recollection normally move together — an easily recalled item is usually one you can place — so they are hard to prise apart until an experiment suppresses one while sparing the other. Any account treating recognition as a unitary faculty cannot explain how exposure both causes and prevents the error. Diagnostic: At the moment of judgment, is recollection of the study episode available to override the fluency, or suppressed while the trace persists?
T3: Strengthening the trace versus recovering the source (the intervention that backfires). The reflexive way to fix a suspect memory judgment is to make the memory stronger — think harder, re-expose, rehearse. The false fame effect makes this precisely the wrong lever: a manipulation that strengthens the trace but does nothing for source-recoverability predicts a larger illusion, because it feeds the fluency that produced the error without restoring the recollective account that would redirect it. What works is orthogonal to trace strength — a source reminder, which adds no fluency at all. The tension is that the two obvious dials, trace strength and source recovery, pull in opposite directions on the outcome, and the intuitive one amplifies the very error it means to cure. Diagnostic: Does the proposed remedy strengthen the trace (feeds the misattribution) or restore recollection of where the item was encountered (repairs it)?
T4: The two-signal machinery versus its landing category (what individuates the effect). The same familiarity-high, recollection-failed architecture runs identically whether the unaccounted-for fluency is assigned to fame, to truth (illusory-truth effect), to the crime scene (unconscious transference), or to liking (mere exposure). What makes it the false fame effect rather than a sibling is not the mechanism but which salient category the test makes available — an external feature of the task, not an internal difference in the machinery. The tension is that the effect's identity is supplied from outside itself: its distinctive content is entirely the attribution target, while the predictive engine is shared across the whole family. Fold in the wrong sibling and one attributes to the mechanism what the task context alone determined. T5: Source amnesia versus false fame (the extra misattribution step). Forgetting where content was learned while retaining the content is source amnesia — a failure of recollection alone. The false fame effect is that forgetting plus an active misassignment of the resulting fluency to a property (fame) the system was never tracking. The tension is that the two look identical up to the point of forgetting, and differ only by whether an additional step fires: does the unaccounted-for fluency simply sit as unplaced familiarity, or does it get routed into a substantive, confident, wrong judgment? Collapsing the two treats a benign gap in source memory as though it were the manufactured belief, and misses that the added attribution step — not the forgetting — is what makes the name "become famous overnight." Diagnostic: Does the perceiver merely fail to place the item, or does the fluency get converted into a positive judgment about a property never encoded?

"False fame effect" is a canonically studied paradigm with its own signature cargo — Jacoby's "Becoming Famous Overnight," Sebastian Weisdorf, the 24-hour delay, the immediate-test reversal, the source-reminder abolition. Yet it presupposes a very specific substrate: a perceiver whose recognition returns a fluency signal dissociable from an episodic-source signal. Strip "fame," "name," and "study list" and the work separates into processing_fluency, which supplies the genuine ease signal, and reality_monitoring, which supplies the fallible use-time source attribution. Those parents travel; the named effect does not. Structural–Framed Character¶
The false fame effect sits at mixed on the structural–framed spectrum — noticeably more structural than the relevance fallacies it is filed near, because it names a real cognitive mechanism rather than rendering a verdict, yet held well short of the structural side by a hard pinning to the episodic-memory substrate. The criteria split. On evaluative weight it leans structural: unlike "false equivalence" or "ad hominem," calling something a false fame effect convicts no one — it describes how a memory system with dissociable familiarity and recollection signals behaves when recollection of source fails, a neutral mechanism that is neither good nor bad (the word "false" tags the misjudgment, not a culpable reasoner). On institutional origin it is likewise structural: the effect is a fact about how episodic memory works, not an artifact of a tradition, survey, or agency — Jacoby and colleagues named and isolated a thing minds already do, the way Airy and Dutton named isostasy rather than inventing it. And on human-practice-bound it patterns structural in the relevant sense: the misattribution fires in any memory-bearing perceiver whether or not anyone studies it, so it does not dissolve when a human practice is removed the way a fallacy label does — it needs a cognizer, but a cognizer is a piece of nature, not an institution.
What pulls it off the structural side is the other two criteria, and they pull hard. Vocab-travels fails: the operative vocabulary — fluency, familiarity versus recollection, source monitoring, study list, fame as attribution category, reversal under immediate test — is irreducibly the vocabulary of episodic-memory research and does not float free of that substrate the way "growing quantity" or a differential equation does. And import-vs-recognize is bimodal: within the memory and social-cognition subfields the mechanism transfers as recognition (the same two-signal architecture is literally at work in illusory truth, unconscious transference, mere exposure), but off that substrate — "a false fame effect" in a sensor or a caching layer — it is import by analogy, borrowing the shape while dropping the two-signal machinery that supplies the predictions.
The portable structural skeleton divides between a genuine ease signal and a fallible use-time source attribution. Those structures are substrate-portable and recur across judgment, measurement, forensics, and systems that must distinguish the origins of commingled items. They do not lift the false fame effect to a prime because they are already carried by processing_fluency and reality_monitoring; the effect's distinctive content — the fluency/recollection dissociation, exposure-delay-judge paradigm, fame-versus-non-famous categories, and immediate-test reversal — is memory-architecture furniture that stays home. Its character is a real, evaluatively neutral, recognized-in-cognition source-attribution failure stated in episodic-memory vocabulary, leaving it mixed rather than a free-floating prime.
Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
This section decides why the false fame effect is a domain-specific abstraction and not a prime — and it carries the case for its domain-specificity.
What is skeletal (could lift toward a cross-domain prime). Strip the memory paradigm and a thin relational structure survives: a genuine ease signal is correctly detected, but a use-time source classifier assigns it to the wrong origin because the correct source is not independently recoverable and a salient alternative is available. The diagnostic corollary is that the signal is not spurious and the repair is to restore its source account rather than merely discount the reading. That skeleton is substrate-portable, but its two operations are already carried by processing_fluency and reality_monitoring. This is the core the effect shares, not what makes it distinctive.
What is domain-bound. Everything that makes this specifically the false fame effect is episodic-memory furniture and none of it survives extraction. It presupposes a perceiver whose recognition machinery returns a fluency signal that can dissociate from an episodic-source signal — an architecture specific to (human, arguably mammalian) episodic memory — plus the worked apparatus of the paradigm: the exposure-then-delay-then-judge design, the famous/non-famous attribution categories, the 24-hour delay or divided attention as recollection suppressor, the immediate-test reversal, and the source-reminder abolition. The vocabulary — fluency, familiarity versus recollection, source monitoring, study list, "becoming famous overnight" — is the worked language of memory research, and the empirical cases (Jacoby's Sebastian Weisdorf, eyewitness unconscious transference) are drawn from it. The decisive test: remove the two-signal memory machinery — a system with no dissociable familiarity and recollection channels — and there is no false fame effect, only the barer physical fact that a signal was assigned to the wrong cause. The fluency/recollection dissociation is the part that stays home, and it is exactly what the prime bar asks the concept to shed.
Why this does not clear the prime bar. A prime is a relational structure whose vocabulary travels and whose cross-domain transfer is recognition of the same mechanism, not analogy. The false fame effect's transfer is bimodal. Within the cognitive and social psychology of memory it moves intact as mechanism — the same familiarity-high, recollection-failed architecture is at work in illusory truth and eyewitness unconscious transference, differing in which category absorbs the fluency. Beyond a memory-bearing perceiver it travels only by analogy: calling a sensor or caching layer's stale reading "a false fame effect" drops the two-signal machinery that supplies the predictions. Déjà vu. The eerie sense of having experienced a genuinely novel situation before. It is a contrast case: déjà vu is a familiarity signal arising with no real prior-exposure trace (or a spurious one), whereas the false fame effect turns on a genuine trace laid down by an actual earlier encounter. Tell: was there in fact a prior exposure producing the fluency (false fame), or is the familiarity felt for a situation never actually encountered before (déjà vu)?
