False Fame Effect¶
The finding that a previously seen non-famous name is later misjudged as famous — because prior exposure produces real processing fluency that, once the memory of its source is lost, gets misattributed to fame rather than to having been seen.
Core Idea¶
The false fame effect (Jacoby and colleagues, late 1980s) is the finding that a name seen earlier — on a list of non-famous people — is later judged famous at a higher rate than an unseen name. The mechanism is misattribution of processing fluency: prior exposure makes the name process more smoothly at test, the perceiver detects that fluency as a felt signal of significance, and — having lost access to where the name was seen — attributes it to fame. The effect grows with delay or divided attention, reverses under immediate test, and vanishes with a source reminder.
Scope of Application¶
The false fame effect lives across the memory and social-cognition subfields of psychology, confined to a perceiver whose recognition returns a fluency signal dissociable from a source memory.

Clarity¶
The paradigm makes legible a recognition failure the everyday notion of memory cannot describe: the trace is intact and being reattributed to the wrong source, not lost. It splits recognition into two dissociable components — familiarity (a graded fluency signal) and recollection (episodic source detail) — so the illusion becomes the specific case where familiarity is elevated but source recollection fails. It reframes the felt sense of fame from a verdict to be trusted into a signal whose source is in question, and separates the reality of the signal from the correctness of its interpretation.
Manages Complexity¶
A family of illusions that look unrelated — a name judged famous, a claim judged truer, a bystander misidentified, an ad-seen product preferred — turn out to be one mechanism running through different attribution categories. Factoring recognition into two signals and locating every illusion at the same juncture reduces the whole family to a few controlling variables: trace strength, recoverability of the source, and which attribution category the test makes accessible. The same set predicts appearance, reversal, and abolition.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The paradigm licenses a diagnostic (the familiarity-high, recollection-failed signature, read back to unrecognized prior exposure), an interventionist move (a source reminder eliminates it; delay or divided attention enlarges it; immediate test reverses it), a boundary-drawing move (the effect needs elevated familiarity, failed source recollection, and an available mis-attribution category, and separates neighbors by which category the fluency lands on), and a predictive move from the controlling variables.

Beyond a memory-bearing perceiver it does not transfer. The portable work divides between processing_fluency, which supplies the genuine ease signal, and reality_monitoring, which supplies the fallible source-attribution gate.
