Faceted Vocabulary & Metadata¶
← Back to Domain-Specific Families
Abstractions about controlled descriptors, aliases, qualifiers, metadata roles, and topical, geographic, formal, or methodological facets in knowledge organization.
12 abstractions in this family — domain-specific abstractions that sit near one another in structural-signature space (k-means over structural-signature embeddings). Each is shown with its short description.
- Annotation Drift — The gradual, undocumented shift over time in how annotators apply an unchanged rubric, so identical instances get different labels — a silent recalibration of a measurement instrument, invisible to within-slice agreement and detectable only by re-annotating frozen gold.
- Aspect Qualifier — Attach a controlled modifier from a small closed list to a subject descriptor so the indexed claim names a topic in one specific sense — Aspirin/adverse effects, not aspirin-as-such — factoring topic from aspect to gain precision without vocabulary bloat.
- Attraction (grammar) — A language-production error in which number from a noncontroller noun intrudes on subject–verb agreement, biasing the verb toward the attractor's number.
- Controlled Descriptor — Substitute one governed preferred term from a maintained vocabulary for whatever words a resource used, so every resource on a topic retrieves through the same descriptor regardless of the author's surface phrasing.
- Dependent and independent variables — A paired modeling-role distinction between an outcome variable whose variation is explained and an input variable treated as controlled, assigned, or explanatory within a stated scope.
- Entry Term Alias — Curate a non-preferred surface form — synonym, abbreviation, colloquialism, superseded name — as a silent, non-indexing bridge that routes many-to-one to a canonical descriptor, so users arrive at one place however they name the concept.
- Faceted Vocabulary — Describe a referent by selecting one value per orthogonal, independently combinable axis (material, period, function) instead of matching a single precoordinated heading, so N facets of M values express an N×M space while you maintain only the sum of the value lists.
- Form Facet — Reserve one classification axis in a faceted catalog for genre, document type, or format — assigned independently of topic — so 'what kind of object is this' and 'what is it about' become separate, combinable filters.
- Geographic Facet — Treat spatial location as a separable description axis in a faceted catalog — assigning place independently of topic, form, and period, and binding it to a controlled place authority so the same location is referenced consistently and can be filtered on its own.
- Method-as-Metadata — The cataloging move of recording how a resource was produced or what procedure it employs as a first-class, controlled-vocabulary field — orthogonal to topic, creator, date, and form — so a corpus becomes filterable by technique without reading each item.
- Structured English Immersion — A policy-defined instructional model in which English learners receive deliberately structured, predominantly English instruction adapted to language-development level, with jurisdiction-specific grouping, duration, and access rules.
- Topic Facet — Isolate what a resource is about as a single independently selectable axis in a faceted classification, so topical queries combine with place, time, and form filters at query time instead of being fused in advance into precoordinated compound headings.
