Attraction (grammar)¶

Grammatical attraction occurs when a feature-bearing but grammatically inappropriate word—the attractor—intrudes on feature realization at a target. In the canonical number-agreement error, a nearby plural noun inside the subject phrase biases a plural verb although the singular head controls agreement.
Its operative boundary is not supplied by the name alone. Preserve this identity: A language-production error in which number from a noncontroller noun intrudes on subject–verb agreement, biasing the verb toward the attractor's number. Validity boundary: The produced verb number must be traceable to a number-marked attractor rather than to the subject head that governs agreement; ordinary variation is insufficient. What It Is Not¶
- Not grammatical agreement. Attraction is a departure from the governing agreement relation.
- Not licensed variation. A dialectally valid form is not a production error under that grammar.
- Not semantic notional agreement by default. Conceptual number and grammatical intrusion must be distinguished experimentally.
- Not mere adjacency. The attractor's feature and structural accessibility, not proximity alone, drive the effect.
- Not a typo with no feature source. The erroneous feature must be traceable to an attractor or retrieval competitor.
Scope of Application¶
The abstraction recurs literally within production and comprehension of subject–verb number agreement. The following habitats preserve the same recognition machinery; they are not invitations to extend the name metaphorically.
- Subject–verb number. a local plural noun attracts plural verb morphology.
- Comprehension illusions. a number-mismatching attractor can reduce detection of a subject–verb agreement violation.
- Cross-linguistic processing. word order, case marking, and rich morphology can alter number-agreement attraction patterns.
Reported attraction involving gender, person, pronouns, or case is a related cross-feature extension, not part of this entry's locked identity without a direct source for the additional feature.
Clarity¶
Specify the grammar assumed, controller, target, attractor, feature, and whether the evidence comes from production or comprehension. A surface mismatch is not enough: it may reflect coordination, notional agreement, dialect, or annotation error.
A practical identification audit begins with the typed roles rather than the title: establish the grammatical controller, verify the target, then test the remaining conditions and exclusions. If the case retains only the portable skeleton described below, it should be named through a parent abstraction rather than as Attraction (grammar).
Manages Complexity¶
The phenomenon makes a normally hidden agreement computation observable through patterned errors. Factorial manipulations of feature markedness and syntactic position separate structural encoding from memory retrieval and conceptual influences.
The compression remains accountable because each simplification has a named failure condition. Disagreement can be localized to a missing role, an invalid assumption, an ambiguous measurement, or a neighboring abstraction instead of being hidden inside an unanalyzed label.
Abstract Reasoning¶

Compare error or reading disruption across matched attractor conditions. R4. Control semantic number, linear distance, and structural position. R5. These moves separate definition, derivation, measurement, and interpretation. A formal consequence does not by itself prove that an observed case instantiates the abstraction, while an observed resemblance does not relax the formal or institutional recognition conditions.

The name transfers literally among sourced subject–verb number-agreement attraction phenomena across languages. Other feature-intrusion phenomena are related extensions; interference and constraint supply the broader portable relations, while any generic distraction or metaphorical pull is not grammatical attraction.
The transfer boundary is explicit: DOMAIN-SPECIFIC PASS / PRIME FAIL. The error recurs in subject–verb number agreement, including complex noun phrases and cross-linguistic constructions. Literal recognition retains the specialist vocabulary and validity conditions of psycholinguistics and grammar; outside that setting only broader parent operations transfer. Experiments vary whether a distractor is grammatically plural and whether it denotes multiple entities. A stronger effect of grammatical plurality isolates attraction from purely conceptual notional agreement. [2]
