Core Idea

Logophoricity is a binding phenomenon in which special anaphoric forms refer to the person whose speech, thought, or feeling is represented from an external clause. [1]

A logophoric form marks reference to the individual whose speech, thought, feeling, or consciousness is represented in a discourse domain. In canonical West African systems, a morphologically distinct pronoun contrasts with ordinary personal pronouns inside reported-attitude contexts. Broader analyses distinguish dedicated logophoric pronouns from logophoric uses of reflexives and perspective-sensitive anaphora.

Its operative boundary is not supplied by the name alone. Preserve this identity: A binding phenomenon in which special anaphoric forms refer to the person whose speech, thought, or feeling is represented from an external clause. Validity boundary: The antecedent must be the reported consciousness or speech center outside the logophor's clause; ordinary coreference or deixis is not sufficient. The entry therefore captures a reusable specialist role structure rather than a topic label, a single historical instance, or a loose analogy.

Structural Signature

Sig role-phrases:

  • the logophoric center — the person whose perspective, speech, thought, or feeling is represented
  • the attitude or report domain — the clause or discourse region licensed by a speech or consciousness predicate
  • the logophoric form — a dedicated pronoun or marked anaphoric strategy
  • the antecedent relation — obligatory or constrained reference back to the perspective holder
  • the ordinary-pronoun contrast — a morphological or distributional opposition that changes reference
  • the domain boundary — the structural or discourse limit of logophoric licensing
  • the perspective hierarchy — differences among speech, thought, perception, and empathy predicates

Recognition test. A case qualifies only when the analyst can map the declared the logophoric center, the attitude or report domain, the logophoric form, the antecedent relation, the ordinary-pronoun contrast and preserve the specialist validity conditions. Shared vocabulary, a similar output, or a generic instance of one parent relation is insufficient.

What It Is Not

  • Not ordinary coreference. Reference alone does not establish a perspective-licensed form.
  • Not a reflexive in every language. Dedicated logophoric pronouns can be morphologically and distributionally distinct.
  • Not first-person quotation. The logophoric center is typically reported from outside the quoted speaker's direct first person.
  • Not free indirect discourse as a synonym. Literary perspective can be logophoric without exhausting the grammatical phenomenon.
  • Not speaker empathy alone. Licensing depends on the language's grammatical and discourse conditions.

Scope of Application

The abstraction recurs literally within languages and constructions that grammatically track the reported perspective holder across anaphoric domains. The following habitats preserve the same recognition machinery; they are not invitations to extend the name metaphorically.

  • Dedicated pronoun systems. special forms distinguish the attitude holder from other third persons.
  • Reported speech. the source of an utterance serves as a logophoric center.
  • Thought and feeling reports. consciousness predicates license perspective-sensitive reference.
  • Long-distance anaphora. some reflexive systems show logophoric behavior beyond local binding.
  • Typology. languages differ in forms, predicate hierarchies, and domain boundaries.
  • Discourse analysis. shifts of center explain otherwise puzzling reference choices.

Clarity

A translation using the same English pronoun can hide the contrast. Analysis must preserve the original morphology, antecedent, predicate, and clause boundary. The label should not be applied solely because a sentence describes someone's thoughts; a distinctive reference dependency must be shown.

A practical identification audit begins with the typed roles rather than the title: establish the logophoric center, verify the attitude or report domain, then test the remaining conditions and exclusions. If the case retains only the portable skeleton described below, it should be named through a parent abstraction rather than as Logophoricity.

Manages Complexity

Logophoricity connects syntax, morphology, semantics, and discourse perspective in one dependency. It explains why person and reference marking can follow the represented consciousness rather than the utterance speaker or the nearest grammatical antecedent.

The compression remains accountable because each simplification has a named failure condition. Disagreement can be localized to a missing role, an invalid assumption, an ambiguous measurement, or a neighboring abstraction instead of being hidden inside an unanalyzed label.

Abstract Reasoning

R1. Identify the proposed perspective holder and licensing predicate. R2. Contrast the logophoric form with the ordinary pronoun in the same environment. R3. Test person, locality, and clause-boundary restrictions. R4. Separate dedicated morphology from logophoric uses of other anaphors. R5. Track center shifts across embedded reports and discourse segments.

These moves separate definition, derivation, measurement, and interpretation. A formal consequence does not by itself prove that an observed case instantiates the abstraction, while an observed resemblance does not relax the formal or institutional recognition conditions.

Knowledge Transfer

The analysis transfers literally across languages with dedicated or demonstrably perspective-sensitive anaphoric systems. Indexicality and Perspective are related lexical and conceptual neighbors, not parent identities; applying 'logophoric' to any empathetic narration or point-of-view shot without grammatical reference behavior is analogical.

The transfer boundary is explicit: DOMAIN-SPECIFIC PASS / PRIME FAIL: Logophoric marking recurs across clauses and languages with morphologically distinct pronouns or related anaphoric strategies. Literal recognition retains the specialist vocabulary and validity conditions of syntax, binding, and discourse linguistics; outside that setting only broader parent operations transfer. The safe move beyond the home habitat is to carry the applicable parent relation and leave the specialist name behind unless every defining role remains literal.

Examples

Canonical: the Ewe logophoric pronoun

In a report of another person's speech or consciousness, Ewe can use a distinct pronoun to refer to that reported individual, contrasting with an ordinary third-person pronoun that points elsewhere. The interpretation follows the logophoric center established by the report rather than simple person agreement with the current speaker. [1]

Mapped back: the logophoric center; the attitude or report domain; the logophoric form; the antecedent relation; the ordinary-pronoun contrast.

Applied / In Practice: testing a long-distance reflexive

A researcher finds a reflexive outside its usual local binding domain. Rather than declaring it logophoric from distance alone, the analysis varies attitude predicates, perspective holders, person features, and intervening centers. A logophoric account gains support only if the form systematically tracks the represented consciousness under the language's licensing hierarchy. [2]

Mapped back: the logophoric center; the domain boundary; the perspective hierarchy; the antecedent relation.

Structural Tensions

T1: Syntactic binding vs discourse perspective. The dependency has structural limits yet follows a perspective holder rather than only local syntax. Diagnostic: Which restriction is grammatical and which is discourse-conditioned?

T2: Dedicated form vs logophoric use. Some languages have special pronouns; others recruit reflexives or ordinary anaphors. Diagnostic: Is the form lexically logophoric or contextually licensed?

T3: Speaker center vs reported center. Utterance indexicals default to the current speaker while logophoric forms track an embedded consciousness. Diagnostic: Whose commitments and perceptions organize the clause?

T4: Cross-linguistic category vs language-specific grammar. A comparative label reveals a pattern but can erase distinct morphosyntax. Diagnostic: What contrast is overt in this language?

T5: Predicate hierarchy vs categorical licensing. Speech, thought, feeling, and perception predicates may license forms at different strengths. Diagnostic: Has the predicate class been tested rather than assumed?

T6: Domain autonomy vs prime reduction. Indexicality and perspective omit the special anaphoric form and report-domain dependency. Diagnostic: Would ordinary perspective tracking count without grammatical logophoric reference?

Structural–Framed Character

The five-criterion aggregate is 0.45 (mixed). The judgment is criterion-specific:

  • Vocabulary travels — material (0.50). The complete vocabulary remains tied to the typed roles in the Structural Signature.
  • Evaluative weight — low (0.25). Application carries the stated degree of normative or interpretive judgment beyond structural recognition.
  • Institutional origin — material (0.50). The abstraction depends to this degree on a scholarly, technical, legal, or social convention.
  • Human-practice bound — material (0.50). Recognition depends to this degree on organized practice, language, measurement, or institutional action.
  • Import versus recognize — material (0.50). Beyond its home habitat, use of the full name increasingly becomes analogy rather than literal recognition.

The portable skeleton is a reference form is anchored to a locally represented center of consciousness rather than solely to the utterance speaker or nearest structural antecedent. The named abstraction remains mixed because that skeleton alone does not supply its specialist objects, constraints, or tests.

Structural Core vs. Domain Accent

Structural core: A reference form is anchored to a locally represented center of consciousness rather than solely to the utterance speaker or nearest structural antecedent.

Domain accent: Logophoric pronouns, attitude predicates, reported discourse, anaphoric binding, clause domains, and cross-linguistic morphology.

Why it does not clear the prime bar: Perspective anchoring travels; logophoricity is the grammatical anaphoric dependency tied to reported consciousness. Generalization therefore routes through parent abstractions; preserving the specialist name requires the full accent.

  • Indexicality (prime:indexicality). Interpretation depends on a contextually supplied center, here the logophoric perspective holder.
  • Perspective (prime:perspective). The construction organizes reference around the speech, thought, or feeling of a represented person.

These are prose placement proposals only. They create no dag_edges; endpoint, redundancy, and cycle checks are recorded separately in the bundle's placement memo.

Parents (2) — more general patterns this builds on

  • Logophoricity is a kind of Relation Prime

The accepted reference-grade review places Logophoricity under Relation because the child instantiates or depends on the parent's broader structure while retaining its own constitutive identity.

  • Logophoricity presupposes Frame of Reference Prime

The accepted reference-grade review places Logophoricity under Frame of Reference because the child instantiates or depends on the parent's broader structure while retaining its own constitutive identity.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space

Logophoricity sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (83rd percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.

Not to Be Confused With

  • Reflexive anaphora. local or long-distance self-reference governed by binding systems. Tell: Is perspective-holder status required beyond structural binding?
  • Shifted indexical. an indexical interpreted relative to an embedded context. Tell: Is the form an indexical like 'I' or a logophoric anaphor?
  • Free indirect discourse. a narrative technique blending narrator and character voice. Tell: Is there a grammatical pronoun contrast?
  • Indirect speech. the clause type that can host logophoricity. Tell: Does the language mark the reported center specially?
  • Empathy hierarchy. speaker alignment with a participant. Tell: Is the reference licensed by a specific logophoric form and domain?
