Friction Budgeting¶
The design discipline of treating interaction cost as an explicit allocation variable rather than a uniform negative — concentrating load-bearing friction where it buys reflection, safety, or consent, and removing dead weight elsewhere, under a bounded user-tolerance budget.
Core Idea¶
Friction budgeting is the design discipline of treating interaction cost — the effort, time, attention, or steps a user must expend through a flow — as an explicit allocation variable rather than a uniformly negative quantity to be minimised. Friction is bivalent (dead weight in some placements, load-bearing in others, purchasing reflection, safety, consent, or abuse-prevention); the designer allocates it deliberately across steps; and the allocation is budget-constrained by user tolerance, so adding friction at one step forces removal elsewhere.
Scope of Application¶
Because friction budgeting is a prescriptive design method, it applies wherever its precondition holds — a designed flow whose interaction cost can be allocated across steps under a tolerance ceiling. The areas below are genuine re-uses of the same method.
- UX and product design — the home: one-click checkout versus "type DELETE to confirm."
- Financial controls and approval workflows — auto-approving small expenses, gating large ones.
- Consent and informed-choice processes — deliberation cost sized to a decision's weight.
- Trust-and-safety and content moderation — rate limits, cooldowns, "are you sure?" gates.
- Software release discipline, public-safety design, and policy — deployment gates; speed bumps; waiting periods.
Clarity¶
The frame pulls apart distinctions "make it easier" collapses: placement from amount (the same total cost yields opposite outcomes depending where it sits), bad friction from good, and user-friction from designer-friction (exporting the designer's unsolved difficulty onto the user). Its sharpest tool is a counterfactual test: if I removed this friction, what would replace its function? "Nothing" means dead weight; "a worse downstream outcome" means load-bearing.
Manages Complexity¶
Without the frame, per-step effort is an open deliberation collapsing to one monotone command ("make it easier") that strips load-bearing friction with the cruft. Friction budgeting makes interaction cost one allocation variable governed by a few per-step scalars (downside risk, warranted reflection, abuse vectors) plus one budget ceiling, so redesign becomes reallocation across a fixed budget rather than uniform reduction.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The bivalence and budget constraint license diagnosis via the counterfactual replacement test, two counterintuitive interventions (removing friction can increase harm by exporting it; adding friction can increase throughput by clearing a bottleneck), boundary-drawing on placement-versus-amount and the user/designer line, and prediction that the tolerance ceiling forces any local addition to imply a non-local subtraction, with the audit sequenced before the cuts.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within the design family the move ports cleanly as the same method — every target shares the precondition of a designed flow with allocable cost under a ceiling — so the bivalence test, placement-versus-amount distinction, budget constraint, and intervention library carry without translation (the nudge/sludge tradition is the same idea renamed). Beyond it the residue is a shared abstract mechanism: allocate a bivalent cost to where it earns its keep, carried by the parents interaction_cost, error_proofing_poka_yoke, and commitment plus choice architecture. Past genuinely designed flows the term is loose analogy.
