Geneticization¶
A social and institutional process in which human differences, conditions, identities, or risks are increasingly reclassified, explained, and acted upon in genetic or genomic terms, shifting attention and authority toward inherited variation.
Core Idea¶
Geneticization is a social and institutional process in which a human difference, condition, identity, behavior, or risk is increasingly classified, explained, predicted, or governed in genetic or genomic terms. The process does more than add a genetic fact to an otherwise unchanged account. Genetic evidence or vocabulary becomes an organizing frame: it alters what is treated as the relevant unit of difference, which causes receive attention, who counts as at risk, which experts and institutions gain authority, and which interventions appear reasonable. Abby Lippman's early formulation emphasized the reduction of differences between people to DNA codes and the tendency to define disorders, behaviors, and variation as wholly or primarily genetic.
Scope of Application¶
In medicine, geneticization can reorganize a syndrome around a variant, divide one diagnosis into molecular subtypes, extend risk categories to asymptomatic relatives, or make screening a routine response. The analysis asks whether this changes clinical pathways, professional jurisdiction, patient identity, or funding—not simply whether a biomarker exists. Diagnostic geneticization is especially visible when a laboratory classification begins to outrank symptoms or lived experience, but its reach may be constrained by low predictive value, cost, professional routines, and patients' own interpretations.
Clarity¶
The word names a directional process, not a static property. An account is more geneticized when genetic representation has gained organizing force relative to an identified baseline. This comparative grammar avoids the empty claim that anything involving DNA is geneticized.
Analyses should separate five propositions: genetic language has become more visible; genetic causes receive more weight; genetic classifications organize people differently; genetic experts or infrastructures gain authority; and downstream practices change.
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction organizes a difficult causal field by distinguishing scientific evidence from its representation, institutional uptake, and consequence. Without it, researchers may treat the publication of a genetic association as though it directly caused public fatalism or clinical change. The role sequence forces the missing links into view: representation, classification, authority, translation, uptake, and outcome.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Geneticization supports counterfactual and comparative questions. Would the same person be classified, counseled, insured, stigmatized, or treated differently if genetic information were absent? Did a genomic subtype change the ontology of the disease or only refine an existing measure? Which non-genetic explanation lost salience, and was it actually displaced? Who can act on the genetic category, and through which institutional rule?
Knowledge Transfer¶
The concept transfers a vocabulary among medical sociology, bioethics, science and technology studies, public health, disability studies, and genetics. It lets clinicians distinguish the biological validity of a finding from claims about its social meaning. It lets social researchers specify which part of a biomedical transformation they observed. It lets policymakers ask whether a program redirects responsibility or resources toward individual genomes and away from environmental or structural interventions.
