A precoordinated heading like "Agriculture – Iowa" fuses topic and place; the facet decomposes it into subject: agriculture and place: Iowa, each indexed on its own axis from a controlled authority, so either can be queried without the other.

A catalog built on "Agriculture – Iowa" cannot separately answer "everything about Iowa, whatever the topic." Pulling place onto its own axis dissolves that, and — because values draw from a stable authority — settles what counts as the same place across the collection.

Manages Complexity

The facet compresses two complexities at once. It factors the combinatorial topic×place product into summed vocabularies, so partial and joint queries answer without prebuilt composites. And, specific to place, it binds values to a controlled authority (LC Name Authority, Getty TGN, GeoNames, ISO 3166) with stable identifiers, so the cataloger tracks one bounded quantity — the place's identifier — and "the same place" is settled once for the whole collection.

Abstract Reasoning

The facet supports a separation diagnostic — deciding whether place is fused into the subject string or carried on its own axis — and predicts joint and standalone retrieval from that orthogonality. Distinctively, it grounds entity-resolution inference via a place authority — binding "France," "French Republic," and a misspelling to one identifier.
