Hjelmslev and Uldall's formal structural theory of language, analyzing expression and content as parallel planes composed of minimal glossemes and defined by networks of internal dependencies.

Core Idea¶

Glossematics pursues a highly formal description of language as relations. Expression and content each have form distinct from their physical or conceptual substance, and minimal glossemes receive identity from the dependencies in which they participate.

The theory distinguishes the realized process of discourse from the underlying system of alternatives. Its immanent ambition makes it foundational in semiotics while also raising questions about how abstract structure reconnects with sound, reference, cognition, and social use.

Structural Signature¶

Expression plane — Organizes signifier-side form independently of its substance. It is semiotic plane. Counterfactual: Sound alone is substance, not the full formal plane.
Content plane — Organizes meaning-side form independently of particular concepts or referents. It is semiotic plane. Counterfactual: External objects do not directly define the system.
Glossemes — Provide minimal units on both planes. It is analytic unit. Counterfactual: Phonemes cover only part of the expression-side analogy.
Dependency functions — Define relations and distribute units. It is structural principle. Counterfactual: Isolated inventory misses the theory's relational core.
Process — Represents syntagmatic realization in discourse. It is sequence axis. Counterfactual: System alone cannot account for actual combinations.
System — Represents paradigmatic possibilities and correlations. It is selection axis. Counterfactual: A corpus sequence alone does not define the language structure.

What It Is Not¶

Glossematics is not any study of words or glosses.
A phoneme inventory covers only part of the expression plane.
Glosseme and morpheme are not automatic synonyms.
Later functional grammar should not be retroactively identified with the original theory.
Closest near-miss. The morpheme is conventionally a minimal meaningful form; a content glosseme belongs to a distinct theoretical decomposition and should not be equated automatically.

Semiotics. Generalizes expression–content analysis to sign systems.
History of linguistic theory. Studies Copenhagen School methodology.
Functional-structural comparison. Traces inheritance and divergence in later grammars.

Clarity¶

Use the theory's plane, form, substance, process, system, glosseme, and dependency terms consistently. Name which Hjelmslev or Uldall formulation is followed and distinguish historical influence from direct method use.

Manages Complexity¶

The framework doubles linguistic structure across expression and content, then cross-classifies each by form and substance and analyzes system versus process. Its precision depends on resisting familiar but misleading unit equivalences.

Abstract Reasoning¶

Define corpus and level of analysis.
Separate expression/content and form/substance distinctions.
Use commutation and segmentation to propose minimal units.
Map dependencies in syntagmatic process and paradigmatic system.
Test internal adequacy and state what external semantic or social questions the immanent model brackets.

Knowledge Transfer¶

Relational two-plane analysis can inform semiotics, but glossematics as a named theory requires its specific categories and immanent method. Calling any formal linguistics mathematical does not establish the identity.

Structural–Framed Character¶

Glossematics is structural as two-plane dependency analysis and framed by Copenhagen structuralism. Elements are functions of relations rather than independently given atoms.

Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶

The broader pattern is relational decomposition of a sign system. Linguistic theory supplies expression, content, commutation, syntagm, paradigm, and immanent analysis.
