Heuristic-systematic model of information processing¶
A dual-process persuasion model in which people assess messages through effortful systematic analysis, low-effort heuristic cues or both.
Core Idea¶
The model predicts processing mode from sufficiency thresholds, motivation and ability: heuristic rules offer economical judgments, while systematic scrutiny continues when confidence falls short of the desired level. Recipients compare current judgmental confidence with a sufficiency threshold, deploy accessible heuristics and, when motivated and able, elaborate message evidence; concurrent modes can add to or bias one another. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
