Hindsight Bias¶
The tendency, once an outcome is known, to inflate its perceived prior probability and misremember one's own judgment as closer to it than it was, because outcome knowledge is folded into the memory of the prior situation and reconstructs rather than retrieves it.
Core Idea¶
Hindsight bias, documented by Fischhoff (1975), is the tendency in which learning an uncertain event's outcome causes a person to retrospectively inflate its prior probability and misremember their own pre-outcome judgment as closer to the result. People sincerely report they "knew it all along" because incorporating the outcome reconstructs rather than retrieves the prior judgment. Roese and Vohs identify three dissociable levels — memory distortion, inevitability, foreseeability — all arising from creeping determinism, and the bias operates without awareness, so judges do not discount their contaminated estimates.
Scope of Application¶

Clarity¶
Naming hindsight bias isolates one mechanism — outcome-contaminated reconstruction of priors — from co-occurring post-outcome errors it is conflated with: not outcome bias (judging a decision by its result), not the curse of knowledge, not survivorship bias. It exposes why "you should have known" verdicts are structurally unreliable: the evaluator compares against a prior already contaminated by the outcome, with equally-plausible alternatives faded from view. The Roese-Vohs decomposition splits one foreseeability verdict into three separately testable claims and tells a designer where to intervene.
Manages Complexity¶
Post-outcome judgment generates a wide range of seemingly distinct failures across law, intelligence, punditry, and finance. Hindsight bias compresses them to one mechanism — creeping determinism — letting an investigator reframe any retrospective evaluation as a single question: what could the actor have known without the outcome? The three-level decomposition supplies the few parameters that make it tractable, each with a different responsiveness to intervention, and the qualitative prediction follows across every content domain at once.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The bias licenses a diagnostic (read a confident "obvious in advance" as contamination, measured by the hindsight gap against a matched outcome-blind judge; identify which of the three levels drives it), a differential interventionist move (consider-the-opposite and alternative-listing bite on foreseeability; contemporaneous records defeat memory distortion; awareness and expertise fail), boundary-drawing separating it from co-firing errors, and an order-of-events prediction that grounds the law's preference for ex-ante standards.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within the cognitive psychology of judgment the bias transfers as mechanism, its spread across law, medicine, finance, and intelligence being reach across content domains of one substrate — the human retrospective-judgment system — so the diagnostics, three-level decomposition, and intervention limits port intact. Beyond that substrate a real residue recurs — an inference system folding new evidence into its representation of past states — but it is carried by the parents bayesian_updating, data_leakage, temporal_versioning, and path_dependence (look-ahead bias, leakage, as-of queries), not by hindsight bias, whose memory-reconsolidation cargo stays home. Two things export literally as instruments: pre-mortems and pre-registration.
