Historical glottometry¶
A quantitative non-tree method for historical language subgrouping that measures overlapping innovations to reconstruct entangled genealogies in dialect continua and linkages.
Core Idea¶
Historical glottometry reconstructs language relationships as overlapping subgroups rather than forcing every language into one branching tree. Shared innovations define intersecting isogloss sets, and quantitative measures estimate each subgroup's support and exclusivity, producing an entangled genealogy. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of historical linguistics. It is network-like genealogical reconstruction tailored to linkage diversification.
