Image Schema¶
Use a recurring embodied spatial or dynamic pattern to structure experience and, sometimes, abstract meaning.
Core Idea¶
In cognitive linguistics, an image schema is a low-detail recurring pattern of bodily perception or action—such as CONTAINER's inside/boundary/outside or SOURCE–PATH–GOAL's start/route/endpoint—proposed to structure experience and some linguistic meaning. It is not a detailed mental picture.[ref-3b74b5a9157f][ref-4f42fa999bd5]
Scope of Application¶
The concept helps analyze spatial expressions and metaphorical talk about categories, goals and movement. Its exact inventory and cognitive status remain theoretical and contested; finding a suggestive phrase does not directly prove an innate mental module.[^ref-4f42fa999bd5]
Clarity¶
Separate the embodied source pattern, its skeletal relational roles and the target meaning to which some roles are mapped. As constructed illustrations, CONTAINER language for category membership does not automatically supply all formal laws of set theory, and a career “path” is not a literal trajectory. These exact phrase choices are not represented as cases directly documented by the cited sources.[^ref-07f7409ee246]
Manages Complexity¶
A reusable pattern compresses many episodes into a small relational structure, making cross-context comparison easier. The compression becomes empty if a schema label is stretched to fit any phrase after the fact; applications need explicit role mappings and counterexamples. The checked sources establish no intrinsic opposed-cost tension: schema individuation is an evidence question, and limiting a metaphor's imported inferences is a correctness boundary.[ref-4f42fa999bd5][ref-07f7409ee246]
Abstract Reasoning¶
Specify recurring experience, abstract its roles, map selected roles into a target use and test which inferences survive. Compare rival frames and contexts before inferring that the same schema explains every expression.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Container and path analyses can travel among spatial and abstract language by preserving specific relations. The full bodily process, cultural meaning and target-domain rules do not transfer automatically; the schema remains a theory-bound cognitive-linguistic construct.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Image Schema sits in a moderately populated region (59th percentile for distinctiveness): it has near-neighbors but no dense thicket of look-alikes.
