Implied Reader

Recover the audience a text constructs for itself — the knowledge it presumes, inferences it expects, and role it assigns — by reading its formal choices about what to explain and what to leave implicit, distinct from author and actual reader.

Core Idea

The audience position a text constructs as the competent addressee for its own reception (Wolfgang Iser): the prior knowledge it presupposes without supplying, the inferences it expects, the gaps it leaves to fill, and the role it positions its receiver to inhabit. The construct is internal to the artifact — a structural feature of its choices about what to explain and what to presume — distinct from both the empirical author and any actual reader. The procedure is reconstruction (recover the audience-model from formal traces) then comparison against actual readers.

Scope of Application

Applies wherever its one precondition holds — a made artifact whose features were chosen with some image of a receiver.

  • Literary and rhetorical analysis — the home use, asking who a poem, novel, or speech presumes its reader to be.
  • UX research and persona development — Cooper-style personas are literally implied readers of an interface.
  • Legal hermeneutics — the implied reader of a statute or opinion (Hart's addressee, the "reasonable person").
  • Policy writing — a benefits memo whose implied reader is a compliance officer met by case workers.
  • Technical documentation — a reference presuming an implied caller's prior knowledge and idioms.

Clarity

Naming the implied reader separates three things "the audience" collapses: the empirical reader, the addressee a writer intended, and the addressee the text itself projects. The decisive cut is the last from the first two — a structural feature answerable from the text alone. Its sharpest yield is turning the gap between projected and actual receiver from an accident into a measurable diagnostic.

Manages Complexity

A sprawling diagnostic problem — readers misapply, resist, or find a text incomprehensible, each symptom inviting its own explanation — compresses onto one recoverable object (the audience-model) and one scalar (its fit with actual readers). The qualitative reception reads off the gap rather than requiring a fresh theory per symptom, and the mismatch predicts even where the trouble will land: at each formal choice presuming more than the reader brings.

Abstract Reasoning

The construct licenses a diagnostic inferring the projected addressee from formal choices and inferring misfit from reception symptoms, an interventionist move re-aiming the implied reader and predicting the cascade through every formal choice, boundary-drawing that keeps three audiences apart and respects the recoverability limit, and a predictive reading of the pattern and location of misfire off the sign and size of the gap.
