Informating

The organizational process by which digital technology performs or mediates work while simultaneously generating information about that work, creating new capacities for learning, coordination, surveillance, and control.

Core Idea

Shoshana Zuboff coined informating for a distinctive capacity of computer-mediated technology: the same system that automates or supports an activity also registers data about the activity and translates it into information. A scanner completes checkout while producing inventory and demand records; a numerically controlled machine executes instructions while exposing process state. The work becomes electronically visible and newly available for analysis.[1]

Informating is not inherently emancipatory. The informational text of work may widen knowledge and participation or enable centralized surveillance, comparison, and control. This organizational duality is part of the identity, not an optional moral afterthought.

What It Is Not

It is not digitization alone, data entry alone, generic automation, ordinary reporting, or a synonym for transparency. A system informates when its operation generates a consequential second-order account of the activity being performed. It is not guaranteed organizational learning: traces may be inaccessible, unintelligible, ignored, manipulated, or used only for discipline.

Scope of Application

Informating applies to factories, offices, logistics, retail, platforms, health care, education, and algorithmic management. Zuboff contrasts automation that substitutes for human effort with informating that produces knowledge about productive and administrative processes.[2]

Clarity

Identify the primary activity, the technology's action, the data exhaust or registered state, the transformation into information, the audiences with access, and the downstream decision rights. Separate technical observability from actual interpretability and distinguish worker-facing learning from manager-facing surveillance.

Manages Complexity

The concept reveals that technology changes an organization twice: first by changing task execution, then by creating a symbolic layer through which the organization can inspect itself. This prevents evaluation that counts only labor substitution while ignoring knowledge, coordination, and power effects.

Abstract Reasoning

  2. Identify which actions the system performs or mediates.
  3. Inventory the traces generated as a by-product.
  4. Determine how traces become interpretable information.
  5. Map who can access, combine, and act on it.

Knowledge Transfer

The portable pattern is an intervention that acts on a process also emits a representation of the process, and that representation becomes a new site of power. It transfers to telemetry, digital twins, and platform analytics. The proposed immediate parent is Observability.

Examples

A warehouse-management system assigns picks while recording travel paths, completion times, and exceptions. Those records can help workers diagnose bottlenecks or can rank and discipline them. The same technical trace supports opposite organizational designs.

Orlikowski's studies of technology in organizations show how identical technical capabilities are enacted through institutional structures and human action rather than determining one fixed outcome.[3] Surveillance scholarship likewise emphasizes that visibility disciplines behavior through anticipated comparison, not only direct managerial intervention.[4]
