Information-Scent Failure¶
Diagnose a navigation failure as the surface cues a user reads before clicking — link text, labels, snippets — failing to predict the destination's content, so the user invests a click on a wrong prediction and backtracks, hunts, or abandons.
Core Idea¶
Information-scent failure is the interaction-design failure in which the surface cues a user reads before committing to a navigation path — link text, menu labels, search snippets, icons, breadcrumbs — do not predict the destination's content well enough to guide the click. The user invests a click on the cue, arrives at mismatched content, and backtracks or abandons. The term derives from Pirolli and Card's information-foraging theory: the user forages, allocating click-cost against the cue's predicted value.
Scope of Application¶
The failure lives across HCI, interaction design, and information architecture — every navigation surface where a user commits a click on the basis of a cue.

Clarity¶
Naming the failure isolates the cue-to-destination predictive relationship, separating it from the navigation failures it is lumped with — discoverability failure (no cue exists) upstream and empty-state failure (destination unscaffolded) downstream. It reframes a felt verdict — "users are confused," "the menu is bad" — into a measurable structural claim: the cues do not predict the content behind them, with click-and-bounce as the instrumented fingerprint.
Manages Complexity¶
A UX team otherwise drowns in a heterogeneous stream of navigation complaints, each phrased as a separate verdict across a different surface. The concept compresses that sprawl onto a single structural relation — surface, cue-text, prediction gap — and factors the gap into a small fixed set of kinds (vocabulary, specificity, category, staleness), each with its own remedy, readable off one click-and-bounce signal.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The concept licenses a diagnostic move — reading click-and-bounce as misallocated foraging effort and factoring the prediction gap into its kind. It does boundary-drawing — fixing the failure as the middle step in the navigation chain, distinct from discoverability and empty-state failures. And it supports an interventionist move — routing each gap-kind to its remedy and predicting the click-and-bounce signal should fall as the scent function is repaired.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within HCI, interaction design, and information architecture the concept transfers as mechanism: the three-part structure and foraging model, the gap-kind factoring, and the remedies carry intact across menus, snippets, file trees, and documentation. Beyond computing interfaces the pattern recurs — road signs, shelf browsing — but the foraging-and-analytics apparatus does not travel, so the cross-domain lesson is carried by the parents signaling and attention (and the sibling summary_substance_divergence), not by the named failure.
