Core Idea

The interpretant is the understanding, effect or further sign generated in the relation by which one sign represents an object. A sign constrains a possible interpretation, produces an actual effect in an interpreter, and tends toward a normatively adequate interpretation; the resulting sign can enter another triadic relation. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
