Landing-Page Test¶
A lean-startup demand test that publishes a page describing an unbuilt offering as if it existed, then counts costly commitment signals (sign-ups, pre-orders, deposits) from representative traffic against a pre-committed threshold — a necessary-not-sufficient gate that can kill a weak idea but never confirm a strong one.
Core Idea¶
A landing-page test publishes a minimal public page describing a proposed product as if it already existed, then measures whether strangers respond with a commitment-signaling action — a sign-up, pre-order, or deposit — before the thing is built. Its evidential force comes from two features: the costly action discriminates genuine demand from polite interest along a cost-to-signal hierarchy, and the traffic source must approximate the eventual channel. It is a necessary-not-sufficient gate that measures initial appeal only.
Scope of Application¶
The landing-page test lives across the validation subfields of entrepreneurship and lean-startup practice, as one rung of a cost ladder of pre-build demand tests.

Clarity¶
The label separates three activities teams lump as "validating the idea": market research asks what people would do, prototyping gathers functionality feedback, and the landing-page test elicits a revealed commitment. It blocks the error of treating a poll of stated interest as real demand. Two distinctions sharpen: the cost-to-signal hierarchy (a click is weaker than a pre-order), and the traffic source (a rate is meaningless without knowing who arrived). Most importantly it fixes the epistemic ceiling.
Manages Complexity¶
"Validate the idea" is unbounded. The test collapses it into a fixed four-slot recipe filled in before running: artifact, traffic source, conversion metric, and decision rule. Once specified, validation becomes a bounded procedure with a determinate output. The cost-to-signal hierarchy adds a second compression, collapsing diffuse "interest" onto one ordered scale of evidential weight, so the analyst tracks just the rung, the channel-match, and the threshold result against a fixed asymmetric branch.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The technique licenses signal-weight discrimination (reading evidence off the cost ladder, choosing the cheapest signal that still discriminates), conditioning the conversion rate on the channel (refusing to read a number without knowing who arrived), boundary-drawing on the epistemic ceiling (a pass warrants investment, never confirmation), and pre-committing the decision rule (fixing the threshold in advance to foreclose post-hoc reinterpretation).
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within lean-startup practice the technique transfers as method — the four-slot recipe and cost-to-signal hierarchy carry across the whole cost ladder (smoke test, Wizard-of-Oz, concierge MVP), with crowdfunding the most literal extension. Beyond that toolkit it ports as method with substrate substitutions — study recruitment, programme design, pre-sales — but the work is done by the primes it assembles: signaling_costly (a response discriminates only by costing the responder something) and prototype, plus pre-committing the rule.
