Language coordination¶
The tendency for interlocutors to converge in vocabulary, syntax, function words, pronunciation, or style during interaction.
Core Idea¶
Coordination is measured when a speaker’s linguistic choices become conditionally more similar to a partner’s recent choices than to that speaker’s baseline, sometimes reflecting affiliation, power, attention, or task alignment. Perception, priming, audience design, and accommodation feed recently observed linguistic patterns into production, generating local reciprocal or asymmetric convergence. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
