Lesser magistrate¶

A Reformation-era doctrine that an inferior public office may be authorized or obligated to resist a superior ruler’s unlawful tyranny on behalf of the people.

Core Idea¶

The doctrine limits resistance to constituted intermediate authorities under a declared confessional and legal theory and differs from a general private right of rebellion.^[1] A superior command is judged against divine or fundamental law, an inferior magistrate invokes independent office-based duty and institutional resistance is framed as protection of the legal order rather than private revolt.
