Core Idea

Linear drumming is a way of constructing a drum-set passage so that no two included kit voices are deliberately attacked at the same onset. Kick, snare, hi-hat, ride, toms, and other voices form a succession rather than a stack: one onset is assigned to the kick, the next perhaps to the snare, the next to a hi-hat, and so on. The result can function as a groove, fill, embellishment, or solo phrase. It is not tied to a single meter, subdivision, tempo, genre, or musical function.

The precise object is an onset pattern, not a demand for acoustic silence between hits. A crash cymbal may continue ringing while a later snare is struck; that sustain does not create a second attack at the snare onset. Conversely, a foot-closed hi-hat attacked together with a snare violates strict linearity if both voices are included, even if the foot sound is quiet. A transcription or exercise must therefore declare which voices and ornamental events count.

Gary Chaffee's Linear Time Playing treats linear playing as a learnable coordination vocabulary involving voice coordination, dynamic balance, accents, and the development of time feels in 4/4, half-time, shuffle, and odd meter[1]. His Time Functioning Patterns separately identifies a linear phrasing concept[2]. David Garibaldi's Future Sounds develops contemporary linear styles through groove and permutation studies, while Mark Griffith, writing for the Percussive Arts Society, describes his characteristic funk language as sixteenth-note grooves with all (or most) of the notes played separately[3]. These independent teaching and performance traditions establish more than a descriptive label: they supply a repeatable construction rule, transformations, exercises, and predictable failure cases.

Strict linearity is usually local. A drummer, recording, or song may contain a linear passage without remaining linear throughout. Published accounts of the term sometimes admit grooves in which most, rather than every, attack is separated[3]. This entry reserves the exact node for the strict onset rule and treats looser usages as qualified approximations.

Structural Signature

The abstraction has eight roles:

  • voice inventory — the drum-set components counted as separate attack sources;
  • time reference — a pulse, subdivision grid, or ordered set of performed onset positions;
  • stroke sequence — the ordered events and rests occupying those positions;
  • voice assignment — the kick, snare, cymbal, tom, or other sound assigned to each active position;
  • mutual-exclusion rule — at most one included voice attacks at any one position;
  • limb assignment — hands and feet that execute the sequence, including sticking and orchestration choices;
  • dynamic and articulation layer — accents, ghost notes, openings, damping, and timbral choices that shape the phrase without changing its event order;
  • phrase function — timekeeping groove, fill, transition, embellishment, exercise, or programmed beat.

Let V be the declared voice set and T the ordered onset positions. If X(v,t) records an intentional attack of voice v at position t, strict linearity requires:

for every t in T, the sum over v in V of 1[X(v,t) is an attack] is at most one.

Rests are allowed, so the sum may be zero. The invariant concerns attack coincidence. Sustained resonance, room reverberation, sympathetic vibration, and an open cymbal's decay do not independently violate it.

The full signature is:

declared kit voices + ordered onset framework + one-voice-per-onset constraint + limb/orchestration sequence + expressive shaping → a linear drum-set passage.

What It Is Not

It is not merely a rhythm played on drums. Many ordinary rock and jazz grooves layer a cymbal or hi-hat attack with kick and snare attacks.

It is not musical monophony in the broad theoretical sense. Drum-set sounds are often unpitched or indefinitely pitched, and their decays overlap. “One attack at a time” is narrower than “one sounding note at a time.”

It is not limb independence. Independence exercises maintain simultaneous ostinatos or layered parts; linear playing often manages coordination by serializing the voices instead.

It is not a required cymbal ostinato, rudiment, sticking, or genre. Those can be ingredients, but none defines the abstraction.

It is not improvisation. A linear phrase may be improvised or completely prescribed. Improvisation governs when content is chosen, whereas linearity governs how attacks are distributed.

It is not “linear time” in physics, historical chronology, signal processing, linear algebra, or the colloquial idea of forward motion. The term is a drum-set pedagogical and performance convention[3].

Scope of Application

Linear construction applies to drum-set grooves and fills in funk, fusion, rock, jazz-derived styles, hip-hop, electronic music, and other settings[1]. Chaffee's method explicitly spans straight 4/4, half-time, shuffle, and odd-meter time feels. Garibaldi's materials use grooves and permutations to develop vocabulary rather than prescribe one closed repertoire.

The technique can be performed acoustically, entered into a sequencer, or programmed in a drum machine. The medium is secondary to the constraint: simultaneous kick and hi-hat note-ons break strict linearity in a programmed pattern just as simultaneous physical strikes do on a kit.

Granularity matters. A passage can be linear over a sixteenth-note skeleton while containing a grace-note ornament whose internal strokes are resolved at a finer scale. The analyst must say whether a flam, drag, buzz, or choke gesture counts as one composite ornament or several attacks. Under the strictest event-level reading, a flam contains two near-separated attacks and may remain sequential, while a genuinely coincident layered strike does not. Under notation-level practice, an ornament may be treated as one event. The convention must be consistent.

The included voice inventory also matters. If a transcription omits quiet foot hi-hat closures, it may label a hand-and-kick pattern linear even though the full performance contains simultaneous attacks. A reference-grade claim should include all intentionally attacked kit voices or explicitly state its reduced analytical layer.

Clarity

A recognition procedure asks:

  1. What span is being evaluated: one beat, bar, phrase, fill, section, or complete performance?
  2. Which drum-set voices are included?
  3. What counts as an attack, and how are grace notes and ornaments resolved?
  4. Are there any positions at which two included voices are intentionally attacked together?
  5. Are apparent overlaps only sustains or reverberation from earlier attacks?
  6. Does the pattern remain a time feel, fill, or phrase rather than being classified from genre alone?
  7. Is “linear” being used strictly, or only to mean predominantly separated notes?

If all declared attacks form a single ordered stream with no coincident pair, the passage is strictly linear. If one position layers kick and cymbal, the strict property fails for the evaluated span, although surrounding subsequences may still be linear. If a teacher permits isolated unisons while calling the overall vocabulary linear, the claim should be qualified as stylistic or predominantly linear.

The rule is directly testable from a faithful event list or high-resolution transcription. It is less reliable when inferred from a dense recording without stem separation, because quiet foot and ghost-note attacks can be masked.

Manages Complexity

A drum set invites simultaneous layering: one limb maintains a cymbal pattern, another states a backbeat, and the feet supply bass drum and hi-hat events. Linear drumming replaces that concurrent texture with an ordered allocation problem. The performer asks which voice owns each onset, how the sequence travels among limbs, and how accents turn the stream into a groove.

This serialization reduces one kind of coordination complexity while creating another. The player no longer has to align several attacks at the same instant, but must execute rapid hand-foot transitions, preserve dynamic balance among unequal instruments, and make a discontinuous orchestration feel like one phrase. Chaffee's emphasis on coordination, balance, and accenting follows directly from this trade.

For composition and teaching, the abstraction separates the rhythmic skeleton from orchestration. A sequence of active and silent positions can be generated first; voice assignments can then be permuted while preserving linearity. Accent patterns can move independently of voice order. A short cell can be displaced, inverted in orchestration, or extended across bar lines. The invariant allows many variants to be recognized as members of the same construction family.

For analysis, it makes texture measurable. Rather than saying that a groove “sounds broken up,” one can state the voice set, onset resolution, density, maximum attack multiplicity, and locations of any exceptions.

Abstract Reasoning

Represent a passage as an onset matrix X with rows for voices and columns for ordered time positions. A conventional layered groove may contain several marked cells in one column. A strictly linear passage has column occupancy zero or one.

Several transformations preserve the abstraction:

  • substitute one kit voice for another at an occupied position;
  • permute voice assignments while retaining exactly one assignment per occupied position;
  • insert or remove rests;
  • change dynamics, accents, timbre, or damping;
  • rescale the time grid or place the same sequence in another meter;
  • reassign a stroke to another limb without adding an attack;
  • concatenate two linear cells, provided their boundary positions do not collide.

Other transformations predictably break it. Adding a crash to a kick onset makes column occupancy two. Retaining a hi-hat ostinato underneath the separated kick-snare sequence adds a second row at some columns. Duplicating a voice assignment across two instruments creates a unison layer even if one limb motion triggers both.

Density is independent of linearity. A sparse pattern and a continuous thirty-second-note run may both be linear. Meter is independent too: the ordered stream can inhabit straight, swung, compound, or irregular groupings. What changes with density and meter is performability, phrasing, and perceptual grouping, not the mutual-exclusion invariant.

This formalization also explains why sustain does not matter. The matrix records attack events, not the entire acoustic envelope. A separate resonance matrix could model sounds that continue through later positions, but strict linearity constrains only new attacks.

Knowledge Transfer

The exact name should remain in drum-set practice. Applying “linear drumming” to any serialized process would erase its kit voices, limbs, timbral orchestration, time-feel function, and pedagogical lineage.

Its structure can nevertheless teach transferable reasoning. A concurrent resource problem may be simplified by assigning each time slot to one channel. A complex multichannel event stream may be analyzed by column occupancy. A generative system may preserve a constraint while substituting symbols, permuting assignments, and varying emphasis. Those are broad patterns already represented by Sequencing, Coordination, Constraint, and Rhythm; they do not make Linear Drumming a prime.

In music technology, the definition transfers exactly between acoustic and programmed kits because both can be represented as voice-specific note-on events. It transfers only approximately to melodic instruments, where “one note at a time” is normally discussed as monophony and where the drum-set limb/orchestration problem disappears.

Examples

Abstract sixteenth-note cell. Across eight positions, play K–S–H–T–K–H–S–T, where K is kick, S snare, H closed hi-hat, and T tom. Each position has one attack; dynamics may accent positions two and six without changing linearity.

Linear groove. A repeated kick, snare, and hi-hat sequence creates a backbeat impression even though the snare never coincides with the hi-hat. Perceived layers arise from recurrence and accent, not simultaneous attacks.

Linear fill. Hands and feet distribute a continuous triplet or sixteenth-note stream around snare, toms, and bass drum. Double strokes may occur successively on one voice, but no other voice attacks with them.

Odd-meter application. A seven-beat phrase allocates one voice to every selected subdivision. Changing the grouping to 3+2+2 affects accent and feel, not the one-voice rule.

Programmed beat. A drum-machine piano roll contains kick, clap, and hi-hat notes, with no shared note-on time after all tracks are considered. Long samples may overlap acoustically while the event pattern remains linear.

Nonexample—standard layered backbeat. A hi-hat attacks with the snare on beats two and four. Those columns contain two events, so the groove is not strictly linear.

Nonexample—reduced transcription. A chart showing only kick and snare appears linear, but an omitted foot hi-hat closes on the snare. It can be linear only relative to the declared reduced voice set.

Structural Tensions

  • Separation vs. impact. Single attacks create clarity and motion; layered kick-cymbal or snare-cymbal strikes create weight that strict linearity forbids.
  • Serialization vs. limb independence. One voice per onset simplifies simultaneity but demands fluent hand-foot alternation.
  • Density vs. feasibility. The invariant permits arbitrarily dense streams, while bodies, pedals, rebound, and travel distance limit performance.
  • Strict events vs. musical convention. Exact analysis rejects every unison; stylistic teaching may tolerate rare exceptions and still call a passage linear.
  • Attack identity vs. acoustic overlap. Cymbal and drum decays overlap even when onsets do not, so “one sound at a time” is misleading.
  • Stable grid vs. expressive timing. Microtiming can make nominally shared written positions noncoincident or compress nominally distinct notes; the analytical resolution must be declared.
  • Permutation vs. phrase. Mechanically reassigning voices preserves the invariant but may destroy groove, balance, or musical direction.
  • Full inventory vs. practical notation. Complete event capture is accurate; simplified teaching notation can omit quiet voices and change the classification.

Structural–Framed Character

Linear drumming is structurally strong. It has a declared event alphabet, ordered positions, an exact exclusion rule, transformations that preserve the rule, counterexamples that violate it, and measurable consequences for coordination and texture. The same test applies to performance, notation, and programmed data.

It is also heavily framed. Drum-set voices, hands and feet, groove and fill functions, accent balance, cymbal sustain, rudimental sticking, and the Chaffee/Garibaldi pedagogical tradition are essential to its identity. Remove that framing and only a generic mutually exclusive sequence remains.

This combination makes it a high-confidence domain-specific abstraction. It is more than an example because the drumming community teaches and transforms it as a named method; it is not a prime because its portable core is already Sequencing under a musical constraint.

Structural Core vs. Domain Accent

The structural core is allocate an ordered series of active positions to no more than one channel per position. Sequencing supplies the ordered arrangement. Constraint supplies the occupancy rule. Rhythm supplies temporal recurrence and grouping.

The domain accent supplies the drum kit's heterogeneous voices, limb assignment, attack-versus-sustain distinction, accents and ghost notes, groove/fill functions, sticking pedagogy, and genre history. Those details determine what is counted and what the pattern does musically.

The exact residual is therefore not “a sequence” and not “musical texture” in general. It is a drum-set event-construction practice whose defining invariant is the absence of layered attacks among the included voices.

Sequencing is the strongest live parent. Linear drumming orders selected kit-voice attacks into a single stream and is preserved under voice substitution or permutation so long as the one-event-per-position condition remains true.

Rhythm organizes the positions into pulse, subdivision, accent, meter, and phrase. It is indispensable machinery but does not itself require unlayered attacks.

Coordination governs the distribution of the sequence among hands and feet. Unlike many independence practices, the coordination problem is serialized.

Constraint expresses the mutual-exclusion rule. It is related structural language rather than the most informative catalog genus.

Musical Texture distinguishes the nonlayered attack stream from concurrently articulated kit parts, but it is broader than this technique.
