The mechanism is reconstructive memory operating in parallel across a large population sharing the same schemas. Prasad and Bainbridge's 2022 study put the phenomenon on measured footing. They showed participants sets of famous icons — the Monopoly mascot, the Fruit of the Loom logo, C-3PO, Pikachu, Waldo — each alongside subtly manipulated variants, and asked people to pick the version they had actually seen. For a specific subset of icons, participants converged on the same wrong version at high rates and with high confidence: many "remembered" the Monopoly mascot wearing a monocle he has never had, and reported having seen that version before. The errors were not random noise scattered across the alternatives; they clustered on one particular false version per icon — the version that best fit a plausible schema, here a top-hatted Edwardian gentleman completed with a monocle.

Mapped back: The independent test participants are the uncoordinated population; the logos are the public referent; the monocle-less mascot is the schema-violating detail, contradicting the shared schema that a wealthy Edwardian man wears a monocle. That people independently chose the same wrong image is the channel-less convergence, the product of the reconstructive step filling the gap; their confidence in having "seen it" is the misplaced confidence the effect predicts.

Applied / In Practice

The same confidence-is-not-diagnostic lesson has been operationalized in criminal-justice reform. Reconstructive-memory research — of which shared false memory is a vivid public face — established that a witness's certainty rides on retrieval fluency and fit with expectation, not on accuracy, so a confidently recalled but false identification is entirely possible and multiple witnesses agreeing does not corroborate it. The U.S. National Research Council's 2014 report Identifying the Culprit drew on this science to recommend concrete procedural changes: double-blind lineup administration, standardized non-suggestive instructions, and recording a witness's confidence at the moment of the initial identification rather than treating later courtroom certainty as evidence. The reforms treat plausible, confident recall as something to be probed, not trusted.

The criteria split.
