The Mandela effect is the phenomenon of shared false memories — large numbers of people independently recalling the same incorrect detail about a public fact, image, or quotation (Mandela dying in prison, "Berenstein" Bears, the Monopoly monocle). The mechanism is reconstructive memory operating in parallel across a population sharing schemas: memory rebuilds from compressed traces and schematic priors, so when a shared schema meets a schema-violating source, the same plausible-but-wrong reconstruction is generated independently, with high confidence.
