Meaning–text theory¶
A formal linguistic framework modeling language as a multilevel correspondence between semantic representations and surface text through intermediate syntactic and morphological structures.
Core Idea¶
MTT uses semantic, deep and surface syntax, deep and surface morphology and phonological levels linked by paraphrasing rules and an explanatory combinatorial dictionary rich in lexical functions. A communicative meaning is encoded as a semantic network, successive rule systems choose lexical units and construct dependencies and morphology, and the reverse direction supports analysis from text toward meaning. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
