After Germany surrendered in May 1945, U.S. Army researchers exposed soldiers to a radio-style message arguing that the war against Japan would last at least two more years. A one-sided version supplied only arguments for a long war; a two-sided version also raised the opposing points (America's advantages, Japan's weaknesses) and then answered them. The finding was not that one design simply won: the two-sided message worked better for soldiers who initially disagreed and for the better-educated, while the one-sided message worked as well or better for those already convinced and the less-educated. This established sidedness as a design knob whose right setting depends on the audience.

Boykoff and Boykoff's "Balance as bias" (Global Environmental Change, 2004) content-analyzed U.S. prestige-press coverage (New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal) from 1988 to 2002 and found that a majority of articles gave "balanced" treatment to anthropogenic climate change — presenting the human-cause position and a doubt-casting counter-position as roughly co-equal — despite a strong scientific consensus on the human contribution.
