Method-as-Metadata¶
The cataloging move of recording how a resource was produced or what procedure it employs as a first-class, controlled-vocabulary field — orthogonal to topic, creator, date, and form — so a corpus becomes filterable by technique without reading each item.

Method-as-metadata is the descriptive-cataloging move of recording how a resource was produced or what procedure it employs as a first-class, queryable field on the resource record — distinct from what it is about, who made it, when it appeared, or its form. The structural move is to lift procedure to a searchable axis, so users can filter a corpus by technique ("find all RCTs," "find all inquiry-based materials") without reading each resource. Its worth depends on the granularity of the controlled vocabulary and disciplined tagging.
Scope of Application¶
The convention appears wherever a catalog serves users whose retrieval need is technique-compatibility and the producing procedure is recorded as a queryable field.

Clarity¶
Treating method as metadata makes explicit a retrieval need topic-centered cataloging cannot serve: the user whose requirement is technique-compatibility, not subject-match. Naming method as its own axis separates what a resource is about from how it was produced, two things free-text fuses. It also locates precisely where the field can fail — its usefulness turns on vocabulary granularity and tagging discipline, not mere presence.
Manages Complexity¶
When method lives only in free-text, a technique-compatibility need becomes a per-item reading task scaling with the whole corpus. Method-as-metadata compresses that to a single filter: "read the corpus to find the technique" becomes "constrain one axis to a value," and the same axis newly supports aggregation and crosswalking. The compression is bounded by one design parameter — vocabulary granularity — so the field's usefulness reads off two checks: is it fine enough to cut, and is it applied consistently?
Abstract Reasoning¶
The moves build on two facts: procedure is a queryable axis orthogonal to topic, and its resolving power is set by vocabulary granularity. The convention licenses diagnosis (read a retrieval need as technique-compatibility, inferring when topic-cataloging fails), field-quality diagnosis (predict whether the axis carries weight from granularity and tagging, not mere presence), intervention (lift procedure to a field and predict the corpus-to-query collapse), and boundary-drawing (separate the axis from topic, from its own values, and from the process it describes).

Beyond cataloging the substrate-independent force lives upstream: the impulse to expose a structural feature as a first-class, orthogonal, searchable axis is carried by the parent primes classification, index, and search_and_retrieval (with paradigmatic_vs_syntagmatic_relations). Stripped of LIS framing the move is just tagging; those parents carry the cross-domain lesson.
