Microneurography¶
Directly record localized activity from living human peripheral nerves for bounded physiological interpretation.
Core Idea¶
Microneurography directly records localized activity from human peripheral nerve fibers or small fiber populations. The sampled signal can be interpreted in relation to a tested condition, behavior or participant report, but that added comparison is not required for the recording identity. It is a direct nerve-recording method, not a general proxy for every function of the nerve.
Scope of Application¶
In a 2022 touch study, microneurography recorded and classified single SA-II sensory afferents; subsequent intraneural microstimulation of selected fibers evoked reported pressure. Passive recording alone did not cause that percept. A 2016 study recorded multiunit muscle sympathetic traffic from the right fibular nerve while comparing baseline with hand or foot vibration. These settings share direct nerve recording but differ in unit type and inferential design. This is not a procedure for conducting human research.
Clarity¶
Identify the recorded fiber or population and, when used, the separate context for interpretation. A reported sensation, blood pressure and neural discharge are different measurements. Directness of the nerve signal does not mean it represents all fibers or proves a complete causal account of experience.
Manages Complexity¶
The method can separate neural traffic from downstream bodily effects that only indirectly reflect it. This reduces one ambiguity while leaving sampling, unit classification and representativeness as limits.
Abstract Reasoning¶
If an identified fiber's activity changes with a tested sensory condition, the result links that sampled signal to the condition. It does not establish that activating the fiber would evoke a specific experience; that question needs an additional intervention and report, which changes the evidence and its limits. A study of only downstream blood pressure does not instantiate microneurography.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Recognize the pattern in sensory and sympathetic studies by direct localized peripheral-nerve activity and an identified unit or population; contextual comparisons can support a further inference. Indirect autonomic proxies, surface muscle activity and self-report alone do not preserve this defining relation.
Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Microneurography sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (67th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
