Minimalist program¶
A generative-linguistic research program seeking the simplest computational account of language compatible with interface conditions.
Core Idea¶
Minimalism is a program rather than one fixed grammar, and phases, Merge, features, economy and interfaces have changed across formulations. A small combinatorial operation builds hierarchical expressions, feature-driven constraints regulate derivations and interfaces map them to sound and meaning under economy assumptions. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of linguistic theory. It is the domain-specific identity fixed by the author and formulation date, language faculty and interfaces, primitive operations such as Merge, lexical items and features, derivational constraints, phase or locality assumptions, empirical phenomenon and comparison with prior generative theory are explicit.
