Monotonality

Interpret a tonal work as governed by one persistent tonic, treating apparent modulations as subordinate regions or prolongations within that single overarching tonality.

Core Idea

Monotonality is the theory that a tonal composition has one governing tonic throughout. Passages conventionally described as modulating to other keys are interpreted instead as subordinate regions, tonicizations, or prolongational expansions whose harmonic meaning remains related to the central tonic. Schoenberg formulates the principle to preserve harmonic unity across even remote digressions.[1]

The recognition invariant is one global tonic + hierarchical tonal regions + reinterpretation of modulation as subordinate relation + whole-work harmonic unity. It is an analytical commitment, not the unrelated mathematical property of monotonic change.

Structural Signature

  • A work or movement treated as one analytical span.

What It Is Not

It is not monophony, monotonicity, or atonality. It does not claim that every chord belongs diatonically to one scale, nor that local key experience is unreal. It claims those local regions are hierarchically subordinate in the interpretation of the whole.[1]

It is not identical to Schenkerian analysis, although Schenker’s prolongational theory strongly supports single-tonic hearing and later analysts connect the traditions. Schenker’s apparatus includes structural levels, Urlinie, bass arpeggiation, and voice-leading commitments not contained in the bare principle.[2]

Scope of Application

Monotonality is used to analyze common-practice tonal repertoire, chromatic harmony, long-range key relations, form, and the difference between local tonicization and global tonal succession. It is most defensible where opening, closure, formal return, prolongational structure, and large-scale dominant relations converge on one tonic.

Works organized by progressive tonality, paired tonics, rotational key schemes, or intentionally ambiguous centers may require a rival account rather than forced monotonal reduction.[3]

Clarity

The important question is level: a passage may locally behave as though in E major while the movement remains globally in C major. Calling E a “region” records both the local force and the global subordination.

The theory should not become unfalsifiable. Analysts must state which evidence selects the governing tonic and what would count against it—especially final-key displacement, structurally independent sections, unresolved beginnings, or recurrent competing centers.

Manages Complexity

Monotonality compresses a succession of key labels into one hierarchy. Remote passages become paths through related regions, so the analyst can compare harmonic distance, departure, preparation, and return within one referential map.

The compression can hide genuine plural organization. A single-tonic analysis gains unity by assigning different structural weights, and those assignments require musical argument rather than terminological decree.

Abstract Reasoning

  1. Bound the analytical span.
  2. Identify candidate global tonics from opening, closure, form, cadence, and voice leading.
  3. Label local tonicizations and apparent modulations.
  4. Map each to a region relative to the candidate tonic.
  5. Test whether transitions and returns support hierarchy rather than replacement.
  6. Compare a monotonal reading with progressive, directional, or double-tonic alternatives.
  7. State evidence and counterevidence at local and global levels.
  8. Avoid treating notation or final chord as sufficient by itself.

Knowledge Transfer

The portable structure is hierarchical persistence: one global reference remains active while local reference frames temporarily dominate. The proposed immediate parent is Tonality.

Examples

Remote region. A C-major movement sustains an E-major passage. A monotonal analysis hears E as the major-mediant region of C and explains its entrance and return accordingly.

Prolonged dominant. A long passage that sounds locally stable on G can still function as dominant prolongation within a C-major whole.

Non-example. A work whose movements deliberately begin and end in different unrelated keys may support progressive tonality rather than one persistent tonic.

The portable core is one global reference organizing subordinate local frames. Tonics, keys, harmonic regions, chromatic relations, cadences, and analytical traditions are constitutive domain accent.

Tonality is the proposed immediate parent. Hierarchy, Frame of Reference, Modulation, Prolongation, Unity, and Progressive Tonality are related. Atonality rejects or suspends the tonic hierarchy rather than naming the opposite number of tonics.
