Monotonality¶
Interpret a tonal work as governed by one persistent tonic, treating apparent modulations as subordinate regions or prolongations within that single overarching tonality.
Core Idea¶
Monotonality is the theory that a tonal composition has one governing tonic throughout. Passages conventionally described as modulating to other keys are interpreted instead as subordinate regions, tonicizations, or prolongational expansions whose harmonic meaning remains related to the central tonic. Schoenberg formulates the principle to preserve harmonic unity across even remote digressions.
The recognition invariant is one global tonic + hierarchical tonal regions + reinterpretation of modulation as subordinate relation + whole-work harmonic unity. It is an analytical commitment, not the unrelated mathematical property of monotonic change.
Scope of Application¶
Monotonality is used to analyze common-practice tonal repertoire, chromatic harmony, long-range key relations, form, and the difference between local tonicization and global tonal succession. It is most defensible where opening, closure, formal return, prolongational structure, and large-scale dominant relations converge on one tonic.
Works organized by progressive tonality, paired tonics, rotational key schemes, or intentionally ambiguous centers may require a rival account rather than forced monotonal reduction.
Clarity¶
The important question is level: a passage may locally behave as though in E major while the movement remains globally in C major. Calling E a “region” records both the local force and the global subordination.
The theory should not become unfalsifiable. Analysts must state which evidence selects the governing tonic and what would count against it—especially final-key displacement, structurally independent sections, unresolved beginnings, or recurrent competing centers.
Manages Complexity¶
Monotonality compresses a succession of key labels into one hierarchy. Remote passages become paths through related regions, so the analyst can compare harmonic distance, departure, preparation, and return within one referential map.
The compression can hide genuine plural organization. A single-tonic analysis gains unity by assigning different structural weights, and those assignments require musical argument rather than terminological decree.
